في حين استأنفت مليشيا الحوثيين هجماتها على حركة الشحن التجاري الدولي في المنطقة، أعلنت بعثة «أسبيدس» البحرية التابعة للاتحاد الأوروبي اليوم (الأربعاء) أن أصولها العسكرية وفرت الحماية لدفعة من السفن التجارية أثناء عبورها البحر الأحمر، غربي اليمن.
وقالت مهمة «أسبيدس» في منشور على منصة «إكس»: «أكملت السفن التجارية العابرة للبحر الأحمر رحلتها بأمان تحت حماية أصولنا العسكرية الموجودة في المنطقة»، مؤكدة أن وجودها البحري يساهم في الحفاظ على أحد أهم الممرات المائية في العالم مفتوحاً وآمناً.
وتعد هذه الدفعة الثانية من السفن التي تعلن البعثة حمايتها خلال الشهر الجاري، بالتزامن مع عودة الهجمات الحوثية على الملاحة التجارية في البحر الأحمر وخليج عدن.
وجاء ذلك بعد هجوم تعرضت له السفينة «تهامة» في باب المندب، وأسفر، وفق مصادر يمنية ووكالة «رويترز»، عن مقتل أربعة من أفراد طاقمها واثنين من عناصر الإنقاذ اليمنيين، إضافة إلى إصابة آخرين.
وتعمل عملية «أسبيدس» منذ فبراير 2024 بموجب تفويض دفاعي يركز على حماية السفن المدنية وأطقمها وضمان حرية الملاحة في البحر الأحمر وخليج عدن والمياه الدولية المحيطة بهما. ووفق بيانات الاتحاد الأوروبي، دعمت المهمة منذ إطلاقها مرور أكثر من 1960 سفينة تجارية، وقدمت حماية مباشرة لأكثر من 650 سفينة.
وقد وثقت البعثة خلال الأشهر الماضية عمليات حماية ومساندة لسفن تجارية أثناء عبورها البحر الأحمر، من بينها حماية قدمتها فرقاطات أوروبية خلال يوليو الماضي.
ويأتي التصعيد الحالي في وقت تشهد المنطقة توتراً متزايداً على خطوط الملاحة.
من جهة أخرى، أكدت القيادة المركزية الأمريكية إجبارها 59 سفينة على تغيير مسارها وتعطيل 3 أخرى تنفيذاً للحصار على إيران.
While the Houthi militia resumed its attacks on international commercial shipping in the region, the EU's "EUNAVFOR" maritime mission announced today (Wednesday) that its military assets provided protection for a batch of commercial vessels while crossing the Red Sea, west of Yemen.
The "EUNAVFOR" mission stated in a post on the "X" platform: "The commercial vessels crossing the Red Sea completed their journey safely under the protection of our military assets present in the region," confirming that its naval presence contributes to keeping one of the world's most important waterways open and secure.
This is the second batch of vessels that the mission has announced protection for this month, coinciding with the return of Houthi attacks on commercial navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
This came after an attack on the vessel "Tehama" in Bab al-Mandab, which, according to Yemeni sources and the "Reuters" agency, resulted in the deaths of four crew members and two Yemeni rescue personnel, in addition to injuries to others.
The "EUNAVFOR" operation has been active since February 2024 under a defensive mandate focused on protecting civilian vessels and their crews and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the surrounding international waters. According to EU data, the mission has supported the passage of more than 1,960 commercial vessels since its launch and provided direct protection to over 650 ships.
The mission has documented protection and support operations for commercial vessels while crossing the Red Sea in recent months, including protection provided by European frigates during last July.
The current escalation comes at a time when the region is witnessing increasing tension along shipping lines.
On another note, the U.S. Central Command confirmed that it forced 59 vessels to change their course and disrupted 3 others as part of the blockade on Iran.
