In a move aimed at reshaping the Iranian military leadership following the recent war that resulted in the assassination of a large number of Iranian military leaders, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued today (Monday) a series of decrees that included the top leadership positions in the armed forces and the Revolutionary Guard.

Despite his continued absence and lack of clear public appearances before the Iranian public, which is facing a significant economic crisis, the Iranian Supreme Leader's website announced 6 new appointments for leaders in key military positions, most notably the presidency of the Armed Forces General Staff, which was entrusted to a general in the Revolutionary Guard who led operations during the war.

Khamenei appointed General Ali Abdollahi, a member of the Revolutionary Guard, as the head of the General Staff overseeing both the Revolutionary Guard and the Iranian Army, after he had been leading the Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters and the central operations room of the armed forces. He also confirmed Ahmad Vahidi as the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, a position he had unofficially held since the assassination of his predecessor, Mohammad Pakpour, at the beginning of the war in February, along with the appointment of General Mostafa Izadi as the deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guard.

Brigadier General Ali Azmaei was appointed as the commander of the Revolutionary Guard Navy, succeeding Ali Reza Tangsiri, who was assassinated during the war.

Mojtaba decided to appoint Hossein Taeb as the head of the Basij Resistance Force, which is a paramilitary force in Iran affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard. Its primary mission is to protect the ruling regime, ensure internal stability, and impose the ideological and security dominance of the state.

Taeb had been relieved in June 2022 from the presidency of the Revolutionary Guard Intelligence Organization, a move that many observers linked to intelligence failures in addressing Israeli security breaches within Iran; however, his dismissal did not mean his exit from the sphere of influence.
