Once again, President Donald Trump has done it, and this time it does not seem to be the last; he brought the region to the brink of military confrontation before pulling it back at the last moment to the negotiating table. However, reducing what happened to an "American retreat" does not hold up against the facts. The man manages his crises with the logic of creating as much pressure as possible before reaping the political rewards. Therefore, the suspension of the strike was neither the end of escalation nor an announcement of a change in objective, but rather a transition to a different phase of confrontation.
This time, the question is, why did Trump choose to brake the military option at this particular moment? What changed between the hours when the region was preparing for the strike and the following hours when statements began to talk about the possibility of reaching an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz?
Economic and Military Battle
The new American decision does not seem to be linked to a single factor, but intersects with a set of calculations, the most prominent of which may be the primary driver at the White House: Trump is not facing Iran in a strategic vacuum, but is managing a battle where military options intertwine with the arteries of the global economy and the dynamics of energy prices. The successive rounds of tension have proven that the closer the confrontation gets to vital oil facilities or shipping lines in the Strait of Hormuz, the cost shifts from pressuring Iran to an economic crisis that affects the entire world and reflects on inflation and global markets. Hence, evaluations within the corridors of American decision-making focus on whether the results of the military option and its repercussions will serve higher interests more than a "deal of terms." The economic factor alone does not explain the backgrounds of the decision, as Trump has not abandoned the principle of power; rather, he may have seen that the process of showcasing military readiness still serves its functional and deterrent purpose successfully. Just the realization by the Iranian leadership that the strike option has become a reality was enough to break the deadlock and move the negotiation channels and back-channel messages to a more serious level. For this reason specifically, the statements issued by the American Treasury Secretary regarding the possibility of reaching tangible understandings about navigation in the Strait of Hormuz within hours gained multiplied political weight.
The Iranian Goal of Prolonging the Conflict
In contrast, Tehran did not interpret these transformations from the same American perspective; it does not see that Trump succeeded in imposing his will and complete terms, but rather considered what happened as additional proof that the cost of a comprehensive war and its regional repercussions still impose their brakes on decision-making in Washington. Iran has long built its negotiating doctrine on the premise that the element of time works in its favor, and that prolonging the crises raises the cost of economic and political confrontation on its adversaries. However, this historical bet for Iran now faces a new dilemma: Trump rejects long wars of attrition, but at the same time refuses to appear as if he is retreating or breaking in front of the rules of mutual deterrence. Therefore, he still retains the option of fire, turning the decision for a temporary suspension into an additional pressure and negotiation card.
Israel's Missed Opportunities
On the other side, Tel Aviv looks with a kind of astonishment and concern at the suspension of the military strike, considering this a missed opportunity among dozens that should have been exploited to decisively dismantle Iranian infrastructure and capabilities. It fears that the time used under the title of "negotiations" will provide Tehran with the breathing space and sufficient time to rearrange its cards and overcome the pressures. This confirms that the differences between the allies still exist. Trump wants a politically declarable result: an agreement that ensures navigation, limits nuclear risks, and spares the United States a costly war, while Israel is constantly seeking more radical guarantees regarding Iran's ability to rebuild its strength after any agreement.
Has the Danger of Returning to a Military Strike Scenario Ended?
The indicators do not support this conclusion, as it is clear that if Trump confirms that Iran is still using dialogue merely to buy time, then a return to escalation remains a viable possibility. The difference is that Washington wants this time to enter any upcoming confrontation capable of saying it has "exhausted all diplomatic options." The matter does not seem as some have thought, that Trump changed his goal; rather, he changed the means, and the goal remains to extract an agreement on terms that serve Washington.
Returning to the question about the danger of a strike, the answer will be determined by the upcoming negotiation results. If the bet yields a deal, then power has served its purpose; if it fails, we will quickly discover that the strike was merely postponed.
