The commander of U.S. forces in Europe, General Alexus Greenkiewicz, warned the U.S. Department of Defense that his naval forces no longer have the sufficient capabilities to continue protecting Israel from ballistic missiles, emphasizing that he may have to prioritize the defense of U.S. territory if he does not receive an additional destroyer.
The Washington Post reported, citing informed U.S. officials, that Greenkiewicz sent a confidential memo this week to senior Pentagon officials, clarifying that the shortage of destroyers will force him to choose between protecting the American homeland and continuing to defend Israel.
Depletion Due to War
According to the newspaper, the warning reflects the extent of the pressures that the ongoing war with Iran has placed on U.S. military capabilities, amid the depletion of interceptor missile and defensive weapon stockpiles, and increasing competition among military leadership for limited resources.
This warning comes as the war enters its fifth month, following the collapse of negotiations between Washington and Tehran and the resumption of strikes, while the U.S. administration has intensified its naval deployment and imposed a blockade on Iranian ports after closing the Strait of Hormuz, leading to disruptions in global oil and trade flows. The American destroyers deployed in the eastern Mediterranean have been one of the most important elements in defending Israel, as they intercepted missiles launched by Iran and the Houthis in Yemen using advanced radar and interceptor missile systems.
Maintaining Forces' Readiness
The U.S. European Command is responsible for coordinating military operations in the Mediterranean, but at the same time, it is required to maintain the readiness of its forces to face any potential Russian threat against NATO member states, given that Moscow possesses a missile arsenal capable of targeting U.S. territory. According to the report, the U.S. Navy has five destroyers stationed at the Spanish base in Rota, with a sixth destroyer expected to arrive later this year, but the accumulated maintenance work due to the pace of military operations has reduced the fleet's readiness.
America Bears the Brunt
The report noted that previous Pentagon assessments showed that the United States has borne the brunt of intercepting Iranian ballistic missiles heading toward Israel, using the THAAD system and interceptor missiles launched by American destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean, at a rate exceeding the use of Israeli defense systems.
Washington maintains a significant naval presence in the region, including the aircraft carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS Abraham Lincoln, along with more than 15 warships, to support the naval blockade on Iran and secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in addition to an extra destroyer in the Red Sea to counter threats from the Houthis.
Questions About Strategy
Domestically, criticism of the war is increasing as fears grow about its impact on the economy and rising fuel and commodity prices, which could reflect on the midterm elections. The Washington Post quoted Tom Karako, director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, saying that the warning from the commander of U.S. forces in Europe reveals the extent of the pressures facing the Department of Defense, adding that operating in a wartime situation depletes readiness and ammunition stockpiles. He questioned: What strategy will Washington follow?
