The Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq announced that the Rusafa Investigation Court, specialized in integrity and money laundering cases, has recovered approximately 15.3 million dollars, equivalent to about 20 billion Iraqi dinars, in connection with financial and administrative corruption cases and financial fraud operations.
The council stated in a statement today (Sunday) that the recovery of the amount came as part of ongoing investigations into financial and administrative corruption crimes, confirming the continuation of legal procedures against those involved who resort to illegal methods to achieve gains at the expense of public funds. According to Iraqi authorities, the value of recovered funds and assets has exceeded 535 million dollars (more than 700 billion Iraqi dinars) so far, in addition to millions of dollars, and dozens of gold bars and jewelry, as well as real estate, homes, and farms. Since June of last year, Iraq has witnessed an unprecedented anti-corruption campaign led by the Supreme Judicial Council in coordination with the government, targeting senior officials, current and former MPs, and political figures, following the revelation of extensive corruption files. The campaign targets networks that include current and former MPs, ministry undersecretaries, and general directors, along with prominent political figures, several of whom are currently under investigation.
The Iraqi authorities announced in recent weeks the seizure and recovery of hundreds of millions of dollars, along with large quantities of gold, real estate, and properties, including the seizure of about 19 million dollars and gold in secret hideouts, and the initiation of legal procedures to reduce penalties for defendants who return the embezzled funds to the state treasury. The Iraqi government confirmed that the recovered funds will be directed to support the public treasury, reduce the budget deficit, and finance service projects, while the judiciary described the campaign as part of broader efforts to recover public funds and enhance trust in state institutions.
