The Russian authorities announced that the capital, Moscow, experienced the largest wave of Ukrainian drone attacks in July since the outbreak of the war, at a time when Kyiv continues to intensify its long-range strikes against targets within Russian territory.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that 6,225 Ukrainian drones attempted to head towards the Moscow region during July, confirming that Russian air defense systems managed to intercept most of them before they reached the capital.
Sobyanin explained that air defenses shot down 780 drones that were approaching Moscow directly during the same month, adding that Russian forces also destroyed four drones targeting the capital during the night, without reporting significant losses.
In a related context, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces shot down 274 Ukrainian drones overnight, targeting Moscow and several areas in the southwestern part of the country, in one of the largest aerial attacks Russia has witnessed recently.
In recent months, there has been a noticeable increase in the pace of Ukrainian drone attacks using long-range drones, which target airports, energy facilities, logistics centers, and military bases within Russia, while Kyiv claims that these strikes aim to weaken Russian military capabilities and disrupt supply lines supporting combat operations.
Conversely, Moscow asserts that air defense systems intercept most of these attacks, but it has acknowledged on multiple occasions the temporary disruption of air traffic at Moscow's main airports due to security measures accompanying the attacks. During July alone, Russian authorities announced several temporary closures of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports following successive waves of Ukrainian drones, with Russian officials describing some of these attacks as the largest since the war began.
This comes at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the need to expand the military operation to ensure the removal of Ukrainian forces from Russian territory, including areas annexed by Moscow, to a distance that exceeds the range of the missiles and Western weapons used by Kyiv to target deep into Russia.
Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022, Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drones to strike targets inside Russia, alongside acquiring more advanced Western weapons.
In contrast, Russia has intensified the use of air defense systems around Moscow and vital facilities, while Moscow and Kyiv almost daily exchange announcements about intercepting hundreds of drones and missiles, indicating the widening scope of the war and its reach into the depths of both countries' territories.
