طالب الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب الحكومة الكندية بدفع تعويضات للولايات المتحدة عن الأضرار الناجمة عن دخان حرائق الغابات في مقاطعة أونتاريو، الذي امتد إلى عدة ولايات أمريكية حدودية، ملوحًا بإمكانية فرض رسوم جمركية إضافية على السلع الكندية إذا لم تبذل أوتاوا جهودًا أكبر للسيطرة على الحرائق.
وقال ترمب، في تصريحات للصحفيين عقب عودته من حضور المباراة النهائية لكأس العالم لكرة القدم: إنه أبلغ رئيس الوزراء الكندي مارك كارني بضرورة احتواء حرائق الغابات التي تسببت في تدهور جودة الهواء داخل الولايات المتحدة.
وأضاف: «لدي علاقة جيدة مع مارك كارني، لكن يجب علينا وقف الحرائق هناك، ربما ينبغي عليهم دفع بعض التعويضات لنا أو شيء من هذا القبيل، أو ينبغي لنا فرض بعض الرسوم الجمركية»، في إشارة إلى احتمال اتخاذ إجراءات اقتصادية ضد كندا إذا استمرت تداعيات الحرائق.
وتأتي تصريحات ترمب بعد يوم واحد من تهديده بفرض رسوم جمركية إضافية على الواردات الكندية، معتبرًا أن استمرار الحرائق وتأثيرها العابر للحدود يستوجب تحركًا أكثر فاعلية من جانب السلطات الكندية.

U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded that the Canadian government pay compensation to the United States for the damages caused by the smoke from wildfires in Ontario, which has spread to several bordering U.S. states, hinting at the possibility of imposing additional tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa does not make greater efforts to control the fires.
Trump stated in remarks to reporters after returning from attending the World Cup final that he informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of the need to contain the wildfires that have deteriorated air quality within the United States.
He added, “I have a good relationship with Mark Carney, but we need to stop the fires there; maybe they should pay us some compensation or something like that, or we should impose some tariffs,” referring to the possibility of taking economic measures against Canada if the repercussions of the fires continue.
Trump's remarks come just one day after he threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian imports, considering that the ongoing fires and their cross-border impact require more effective action from Canadian authorities.
