رجّحت صحيفة «نيويورك تايمز»، أن تنزلق الولايات المتحدة وإيران إلى مواجهة عسكرية أوسع، بعد مقتل جنديين أمريكيين في هجوم صاروخي إيراني استهدف قاعدة عسكرية في الأردن، ما دفع واشنطن إلى الرد بضربات استهدفت مواقع عسكرية إيرانية، في تصعيد يهدد بانهيار ما تبقى من جهود احتواء الحرب المستمرة منذ أكثر من أربعة أشهر.
قتلى ورد أمريكي على إيران
وقُتل جنديان أمريكيان وأُصيب آخرون، فيما لا يزال جندي ثالث في عداد المفقودين، إثر هجوم صاروخي إيراني استهدف، (الجمعة)، الأردن. ويعد الهجوم الأول الذي يسقط فيه قتلى أمريكيون بنيران معادية منذ انهيار الهدنة الأخيرة مع إيران، لترتفع حصيلة قتلى الجيش الأمريكي إلى 16 عسكرياً منذ اندلاع الحرب. وبحسب الصحيفة، فإن الهجوم الإيراني الأخير كان الرابع الذي يستهدف الأردن خلال خمسة أيام.
وأعلن الجيش الأمريكي، اليوم (الأحد)، أنه نفذ ضربات استهدفت منشآت للمراقبة الساحلية والدفاعات الجوية الإيرانية، إضافة إلى مواقع تابعة للحرس الثوري، قال إنها مسؤولة عن الهجوم الذي استهدف القوات الأمريكية في الأردن. في المقابل، ردت إيران بالاعتداء على الكويت والبحرين.
وأعلنت الحكومة الكويتية تعرّض منشأة نفطية ومحطة لتوليد الكهرباء ومعالجة المياه لهجمات، بينما أكد تلفزيون البحرين اعتراض وتدمير منظومات الدفاع الجوي اعتداءات جوية إيرانية في سماء المملكة.
تراجع المسار الدبلوماسي
من جانبه، أكد وزير الحرب الأمريكي بيت هيغسيث، أن مقتل الجنديين «لن يؤدي إلا إلى زيادة تصميمنا»، إلا أن التطورات الأخيرة تضع الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، أمام معضلة متزايدة بشأن كيفية إدارة الحرب التي بدأها إلى جانب إسرائيل قبل أكثر من أربعة أشهر، بحسب «نيويورك تايمز».
وكان ترمب تعهد مراراً بأن تكون الحملة العسكرية قصيرة وحاسمة، غير أن الحرب امتدت لأشهر، وأدت إلى اضطراب أسواق الطاقة العالمية، دون أن تنجح حتى الآن في دفع إيران إلى التخلي عن برنامجها النووي.
ورغم اتساع نطاق الهجمات بين الجانبين، لم تظهر أي مؤشرات على استئناف الجهود الدبلوماسية لإنهاء القتال. وكان ترمب لوح سابقاً باستهداف البنية التحتية المدنية في إيران للضغط على طهران من أجل التوصل إلى اتفاق ينهي الحرب، وأكد مسؤولون إيرانيون أن أي استهداف للبنية التحتية المدنية سيقابله رد مماثل على منشآت في دول مجاورة تستضيف قواعد عسكرية أمريكية.
انهيار مذكرة إنهاء الحرب
بدوره، جدّد المرشد الإيراني مجتبى خامنئي، اتهام الولايات المتحدة بانتهاك اتفاق وقف إطلاق النار الموقع في يونيو الماضي، واعتبر توقيع ترمب على الاتفاق «عديم القيمة وباطلاً»، وفق ما نقلته وسائل إعلام رسمية إيرانية.
وهدفت المذكرة إلى إنهاء الحرب التي بدأت بهجوم أمريكي إسرائيلي على إيران، عبر تثبيت وقف إطلاق النار المعلن منذ أبريل، والتفاوض للتوصل إلى اتفاق نهائي خلال مهلة 60 يوماً.
وبحسب وزارة الصحة الإيرانية، أسفرت الضربات الأمريكية منذ 27 يونيو عن مقتل عن 50 شخصاً على الأقل وإصابة أكثر من 500.
The New York Times has suggested that the United States and Iran may slip into a broader military confrontation following the killing of two American soldiers in an Iranian missile attack that targeted a military base in Jordan, prompting Washington to respond with strikes on Iranian military sites, in an escalation that threatens to collapse what remains of efforts to contain the war that has been ongoing for more than four months.
American Casualties and Response to Iran
Two American soldiers were killed and others were injured, while a third soldier remains missing, due to an Iranian missile attack that targeted Jordan on Friday. This is the first attack that has resulted in American casualties from hostile fire since the collapse of the recent truce with Iran, raising the toll of American military deaths to 16 since the outbreak of the war. According to the newspaper, the recent Iranian attack was the fourth targeting Jordan within five days.
The U.S. military announced today (Sunday) that it carried out strikes targeting Iranian coastal surveillance facilities and air defense systems, as well as sites belonging to the Revolutionary Guard, which it said were responsible for the attack on American forces in Jordan. In response, Iran retaliated by attacking Kuwait and Bahrain.
The Kuwaiti government announced that an oil facility and a power generation and water treatment plant were attacked, while Bahrain's television confirmed the interception and destruction of air defense systems against Iranian aerial assaults in the kingdom's skies.
Decline of Diplomatic Efforts
For his part, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed that the killing of the two soldiers "will only increase our resolve," but recent developments place President Donald Trump in an increasingly difficult position regarding how to manage the war he initiated alongside Israel more than four months ago, according to The New York Times.
Trump has repeatedly pledged that the military campaign would be short and decisive; however, the war has extended for months, disrupting global energy markets, without yet succeeding in pushing Iran to abandon its nuclear program.
Despite the widening scope of attacks between the two sides, there have been no signs of a resumption of diplomatic efforts to end the fighting. Trump had previously hinted at targeting civilian infrastructure in Iran to pressure Tehran into reaching an agreement to end the war, and Iranian officials have stated that any targeting of civilian infrastructure would be met with a similar response against facilities in neighboring countries hosting American military bases.
Collapse of the War Termination Memorandum
Meanwhile, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei renewed accusations against the United States of violating the ceasefire agreement signed last June, considering Trump's signing of the agreement "worthless and void," according to Iranian state media.
The memorandum aimed to end the war that began with a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran by solidifying the ceasefire announced since April and negotiating a final agreement within a 60-day timeframe.
According to the Iranian Ministry of Health, U.S. strikes since June 27 have resulted in the deaths of at least 50 people and injuries to more than 500.
