أثارت استقالة وزير الدفاع الأوكراني ميخايلو فيدوروف أزمة سياسية وعسكرية، دفعت الرئيس فولوديمير زيلينسكي (الخميس)، إلى توجيه نداء للحفاظ على وحدة الجيش.
وبعد يوم من إعلان استقالته ضمن تعديل حكومي واسع أجراه زيلينسكي، تجمع مئات المتظاهرين في العاصمة كييف ومدن أخرى، رافعين الأعلام الأوكرانية وأعلام الاتحاد الأوروبي، ومرددين هتافات تطالب بإعادة فيدوروف إلى منصبه.
وأفصح زيلينسكي عن وجود خلاف بين وزير الدفاع فيدوروف وقائد الجيش أولكسندر سيرسكي قائلاً: «بصراحة، لا ينبغي لرئيس تخوض بلاده حرباً أن يضطر إلى الاختيار في ظروف مماثلة»، مضيفاً: «أرغب بشدة في تحقيق الوحدة».
وكشف فيدوروف، الذي يُنظر إليه بأنه مهندس تحديث الجيش الأوكراني، عن تفاصيل الخلاف بينه وقائد الجيش، موضحاً أن ذلك أدى إلى إبعاده من منصبه وأشعل احتجاجات مؤيدة له.
وقال فيدوروف: «بدلاً من التركيز على كيفية هزيمة روسيا بوسائل غير تقليدية، وهو ما يُعد المهمة الأساسية للقائد العام، انشغل بإيجاد طريقة لتقسيم البلاد التي نعيش فيها جميعاً اليوم».
ويحظى فيدوروف، البالغ من العمر 35 عاماً، بشعبية داخل أوكرانيا، وقاد منذ توليه وزارة الدفاع في يناير الماضي جهوداً لتوسيع استخدام الطائرات المسيّرة والتقنيات الحديثة، بهدف تعويض النقص في الجنود والذخائر وتحسين كفاءة القوات الأوكرانية.
وفي مؤشر على اتساع تداعيات الأزمة، أعلن نائب قائد القوات الجوية الأوكرانية بافلو يليزاروف استقالته احتجاجاً على رحيل فيدوروف، مؤكداً أنه انضم إلى القوات المسلحة من أجل تحقيق النصر، لا التظاهر بالإنجاز، كما أعلن مستشار وزارة الدفاع سيرغي ستيرنينكو مغادرته منصبه أيضاً.
وامتدت الانتقادات إلى الساحة السياسية، إذ هاجمت المتحدثة السابقة باسم الرئاسة الأوكرانية يوليا منديل إدارة زيلينسكي، معتبرة أن نهج الحكم الحالي يعيق الإصلاح.
واتهمت منديل الرئيس الأوكراني بإغلاق باب التفاوض مع روسيا والابتعاد عن مسار التغيير، وهي تصريحات لم تعلق عليها الرئاسة الأوكرانية.
وتشير وسائل إعلام أوكرانية إلى أن الخلاف بين فيدوروف وسيرسكي كان أحد أبرز أسباب استبعاد الوزير من الحكومة، بينما رفع متظاهرون لافتات تنتقد القائد العام للجيش وتحمّله مسؤولية إقالة الوزير.
ولم يعلن زيلينسكي حتى الآن اسم خلف لوزير الدفاع، كما لم يصوت البرلمان بصورة نهائية على استقالته، ما يترك الباب مفتوحاً أمام مزيد من الجدل بشأن مستقبل قيادة المؤسسة العسكرية.
يذكر أن التعديل الحكومي الأخير ثاني تغيير واسع يجريه زيلينسكي خلال عام، ورابع تغيير في حقيبة الدفاع منذ بدء الحرب في فبراير 2022.
The resignation of Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has sparked a political and military crisis, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky (on Thursday) to issue a call for the preservation of the army's unity.
One day after announcing his resignation as part of a wide-ranging government reshuffle carried out by Zelensky, hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital Kyiv and other cities, waving Ukrainian and European Union flags, and chanting slogans demanding Fedorov's return to his position.
Zelensky revealed that there was a disagreement between Defense Minister Fedorov and Army Commander Oleksandr Syrskiy, stating: "Honestly, a president whose country is at war should not have to choose under such circumstances," adding: "I strongly desire to achieve unity."
Fedorov, who is seen as the architect of the modernization of the Ukrainian army, disclosed details of the disagreement between him and the army commander, explaining that it led to his removal from office and ignited protests in his support.
Fedorov said: "Instead of focusing on how to defeat Russia through unconventional means, which is the primary task of the commander-in-chief, he was preoccupied with finding a way to divide the country we all live in today."
At 35 years old, Fedorov enjoys popularity within Ukraine and has led efforts to expand the use of drones and modern technologies since taking over the Ministry of Defense last January, aiming to compensate for shortages in soldiers and ammunition and to improve the efficiency of Ukrainian forces.
In a sign of the widening repercussions of the crisis, Ukrainian Air Force Deputy Commander Pavlo Yelyzarov announced his resignation in protest against Fedorov's departure, confirming that he joined the armed forces to achieve victory, not to pretend to achieve it. Defense Ministry advisor Serhiy Sternenko also announced his departure from his position.
Criticism extended to the political arena, as former spokesperson for the Ukrainian presidency Yulia Mendel attacked Zelensky's administration, arguing that the current governance approach hinders reform.
Mendel accused the Ukrainian president of closing the door to negotiations with Russia and straying from the path of change, remarks that the Ukrainian presidency has not commented on.
Ukrainian media indicate that the disagreement between Fedorov and Syrskiy was one of the main reasons for the minister's exclusion from the government, while protesters held signs criticizing the army's commander and holding him responsible for the minister's dismissal.
Zelensky has not yet announced a successor for the Defense Minister, nor has the parliament voted definitively on his resignation, leaving the door open for further debate regarding the future leadership of the military institution.
It is worth noting that the recent government reshuffle is the second major change Zelensky has made in a year and the fourth change in the defense portfolio since the war began in February 2022.
