عادت حاملة الطائرات الأمريكية «جيرالد آر فورد»، اليوم السبت، إلى قاعدتها بعد مهمة استمرت نحو العام. وأعلنت وزارة الحرب الأمريكية (البنتاغون)، أن الوزير بيت هيغسيث يستعد لاستقبالها.
وأوضحت الوزارة في بيان أن هيغسيث يعتزم التوجه إلى قاعدة نورفولك البحرية في ولاية فيرجينيا لاستقبال نحو 4,500 بحار مع عائلاتهم من مجموعة حاملة الطائرات «جيرالد فورد»، التي تشمل حاملة الطائرات «جيرالد فورد» (CVN 78)، والمدمرة «بينبريدج» (DDG 96)، والمدمرة «ماهان» (DDG 72).
وقضت حاملة الطائرات «جيرالد فورد» 326 يوماً في البحر، وهو ما يمثل أطول مهمة انتشار لحاملة طائرات أمريكية خلال الـ50 عاماً الماضية، وثالث أطول فترة منذ حرب فيتنام، وفقاً لبيانات جمعها موقع «يو إس إن آي» الإخباري التابع للمعهد البحري الأمريكي.
وحطمت «جيرالد فورد» الرقم القياسي لأطول فترة انتشار بعد حرب فيتنام في 15 أبريل الماضي، عندما تجاوزت فترة انتشار الحاملة «أبراهام لينكولن»، التي استمرت في الإبحار لمدة 295 يوماً خلال عام 2020.
وشملت فترة انتشار حاملة الطائرات «جيرالد فورد» عملية اعتقال الرئيس الفنزويلي نيكولاس مادورو مطلع العام الحالي والحرب الأمريكية الإسرائيلية على إيران.
و لم تخلُ عملية الانتشار المطول لحاملة الطائرات «جيرالد فورد» من العقبات، إذ أعلن الأسطول الخامس التابع للقيادة المركزية للقوات البحرية الأمريكية -في 12 مارس الماضي- اندلاع حريق على متن الحاملة أثناء أداء مهماتها في مياه البحر الأحمر، ما أسفر عن إصابة بحارَين.
وبحسب صحيفة «نيويورك تايمز»، فقد أكثر من 600 جندي أمريكي إمكانية الوصول إلى أسرّتهم بعد أن اجتاحت النيران بعض مقصورات النوم. واضطر البحارة حينها للنوم على الأرض والطاولات في أعقاب الحريق، الذي استغرق إخماده 30 ساعة. وواجهت الحاملة مشكلات كبيرة في التمديدات الصحية، مما أثر على نحو 650 مرحاضاً على متنها.
The American aircraft carrier "Gerald R. Ford" returned to its base today, Saturday, after a mission that lasted nearly a year. The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced that Secretary Pete Hegseth is preparing to welcome it.
The department clarified in a statement that Hegseth intends to head to Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia to welcome about 4,500 sailors along with their families from the "Gerald Ford" carrier strike group, which includes the aircraft carrier "Gerald Ford" (CVN 78), the destroyer "Benfold" (DDG 65), and the destroyer "Mahan" (DDG 72).
The aircraft carrier "Gerald Ford" spent 326 days at sea, marking the longest deployment of an American aircraft carrier in the past 50 years, and the third longest since the Vietnam War, according to data collected by the "USNI News" website affiliated with the U.S. Naval Institute.
"Gerald Ford" broke the record for the longest deployment since the Vietnam War on April 15, when it surpassed the deployment of the "Abraham Lincoln," which sailed for 295 days in 2020.
The deployment of the "Gerald Ford" aircraft carrier included the operation to apprehend Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year and the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
The prolonged deployment of the "Gerald Ford" aircraft carrier was not without obstacles, as the Fifth Fleet of the U.S. Central Command announced on March 12 that a fire broke out aboard the carrier while it was performing its missions in the Red Sea, resulting in injuries to two sailors.
According to the "New York Times," more than 600 American soldiers lost access to their beds after the fire swept through some of the sleeping quarters. Sailors were forced to sleep on the floor and tables in the aftermath of the fire, which took 30 hours to extinguish. The carrier also faced significant issues with its plumbing, affecting about 650 toilets on board.
