في ظل استعداد حزب العمال لنتائج كارثية في الانتخابات المحلية غداً (الخميس)، يواجه رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر ضغوطاً سياسية متزايدة ومطالبات بالاستقالة؛ على خلفية اتهامات بتضليل البرلمان بشأن تعيين بيتر ماندلسون سفيرا في واشنطن.
ورغم أن التحقيقات كشفت عن تجاوزات في الفحص الأمني وتدخلات حكومية مثيرة للجدل، ما جعل مصداقية الحكومة أمام اختبار حقيقي في مواجهة معارضة شرسة وانتقادات داخلية، إلا أن ستارمر ينفي ذلك بشكل قاطع، مؤكداً أنه لم يتعمد حجب أي معلومات عن النواب.
وقال ستارمر، خلال جلسة برلمانية: «لم أضلل مجلس العموم وأقر بأن معلومات كان ينبغي أن تكون متاحة لي وللمجلس لم تعرض في حينها، لكنني لم أقدم معلومات مضللة»، نافياً علمه بنتيجة الفحص الأمني الأولي.
وأشار ستارمر إلى أن «قراراً متعمداً اتخذ لحجب هذه المعلومات» عنه، موضحاً أن الإجراءات الرسمية للتدقيق الأمني قد اتبعت، وأن مراجعة شاملة أجريت في سبتمبر الماضي، بعد إقالة ماندلسون من منصبه، إثر الكشف عن ملفات جديدة أظهرت علاقته الوثيقة أكثر مما كان معلناً مع جيفري إبستين.
وتتصاعد الدعوات المطالبة باستقالة ستارمر، عقب الكشف الأسبوع الماضي عن فشل ماندلسون في اجتياز الفحص الأمني في يناير 2025، قبل أن يتم تعيينه في المنصب الشهر التالي، بعد تدخل وزارة الخارجية التي تجاوزت توصية الأجهزة المختصة.
وأقيل المسؤول البارز في وزارة الخارجية والكومنولث والتنمية، أولي روبنز، على خلفية القضية، وذلك بعد أن كشف خلال شهادته أمام لجنة الشؤون الخارجية في البرلمان، عن وجود أجواء من الضغط داخل أروقة الحكومة لتسريع إرسال ماندلسون إلى واشنطن.
ورغم محاولات ستارمر احتواء الأزمة، لم تتراجع حدة الانتقادات، واعتبرت زعيمة حزب المحافظين، كيمي بادنوك، أن سمعته على المحك، مشككة في الرواية الزمنية للأحداث، مبينة أن رئيس الوزراء كان ينبغي أن يُطلع البرلمان على مستجدات القضية في أقرب فرصة، وفقاً لمدونة السلوك الوزاري.
In light of the Labour Party's preparation for catastrophic results in tomorrow's (Thursday) local elections, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increasing political pressure and calls for resignation; following accusations of misleading Parliament regarding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador in Washington.
Although investigations have revealed breaches in security checks and controversial government interventions, which have put the government's credibility to a real test in the face of fierce opposition and internal criticism, Starmer firmly denies this, asserting that he did not intentionally withhold any information from MPs.
Starmer stated during a parliamentary session: "I did not mislead the House of Commons and acknowledge that information that should have been available to me and the House was not presented in a timely manner, but I did not provide misleading information," denying any knowledge of the outcome of the initial security check.
He pointed out that "a deliberate decision was made to withhold this information" from him, clarifying that the official procedures for the security vetting were followed, and a comprehensive review was conducted last September, after Mandelson was dismissed from his position, following the revelation of new files that showed his closer relationship with Jeffrey Epstein than had been publicly disclosed.
Calls for Starmer's resignation have intensified following last week's revelation that Mandelson failed to pass the security check in January 2025, before being appointed to the position the following month, after the Foreign Office intervened, overriding the recommendations of the relevant agencies.
A senior official at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Oli Robbins, was dismissed in connection with the case, after he revealed during his testimony before the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament that there was a climate of pressure within government corridors to expedite Mandelson's sending to Washington.
Despite Starmer's attempts to contain the crisis, the intensity of the criticism has not diminished, with Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch stating that his reputation is at stake, questioning the timeline of events, and indicating that the Prime Minister should have informed Parliament of the developments in the case at the earliest opportunity, according to the ministerial code of conduct.
