أعلن مدير الاتصالات في مكتب رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، تيم ألن استقالته أمس (الإثنين)، وسط تصاعد الفضيحة المتعلقة بروابط السفير السابق في واشنطن بيتر ماندلسون بالملياردير الأمريكي الراحل جيفري إبستين، المدان بجرائم جنسية والاتجار بالقاصرات.
وقال ألن في بيان مقتضب: «أقدم استقالتي للسماح ببناء فريق جديد في داونينغ ستريت»، مشيراً إلى أن قراره يأتي بعد أشهر قليلة فقط من توليه المنصب.
ويأتي هذا الرحيل كضربة ثانية لستارمر في أقل من 24 ساعة، بعد استقالة رئيس موظفيه مورغان ماكسويني، الأحد، الذي أعلن أنه يتحمل «المسؤولية الكاملة» عن نصيحته بتعيين ماندلسون سفيراً رغم معرفته بروابطه بإبستين.
ويواجه ستارمر ضغوطاً متزايدة للاستقالة من داخل حزبه العمالي، إذ دعا زعيم حزب العمال الأسكتلندي أنس سروار، إلى تنحيه، معتبراً أن الفضيحة تهدد مصداقية الحكومة.
وأكد ستارمر في تصريحات أمس أنه «لن يستقيل»، وأنه يركز على «بناء فريق جديد» لدعم الحكومة، لكنه اعتذر عن التعيين المثير للجدل.
وبدأت الأزمة في سبتمبر 2025 عندما أفرجت السلطات الأمريكية عن دفعة جديدة من وثائق جيفري إبستين، التي كشفت عن مراسلات إلكترونية تثبت استمرار علاقة ماندلسون السياسي العمالي البارز والصديق المقرب من ستارمر مع إبستين حتى بعد إدانته في 2008 بتهم الاتجار بالقاصرات.
وأظهرت الوثائق أن ماندلسون حافظ على صداقة مع إبستين رغم علمه بجرائمه، ما أثار غضباً عاماً في بريطانيا، ودفع ستارمر إلى إقالة ماندلسون من منصبه سفيراً في واشنطن في أكتوبر الماضي.
وإبستين، الذي توفي في سجنه عام 2019 بحادث انتحار مثير للجدل، كان يدير شبكة واسعة من الروابط مع شخصيات سياسية ومالية عالمية، وأدت وثائقه المفرج عنها تدريجياً إلى فضائح دولية متعددة، بما في ذلك استقالات في النرويج وغيرها.
وتزداد الضغوط على ستارمر مع إعلان الشرطة البريطانية فتح تحقيق في الادعاءات المتعلقة بماندلسون، وسط دعوات من نواب حزب العمال لإجراء تحقيق برلماني مستقل.
The Director of Communications in the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Tim Allen, announced his resignation yesterday (Monday), amid the escalating scandal regarding the links of former Washington ambassador Peter Mandelson to the late American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sexual crimes and trafficking minors.
Allen stated in a brief statement: "I am resigning to allow for the building of a new team in Downing Street," noting that his decision comes just a few months after taking up the position.
This departure marks a second blow to Starmer in less than 24 hours, following the resignation of his Chief of Staff Morgan McSweeney on Sunday, who announced that he takes "full responsibility" for his advice to appoint Mandelson as ambassador despite knowing his connections to Epstein.
Starmer is facing increasing pressure to resign from within his Labour Party, as Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has called for his resignation, considering that the scandal threatens the credibility of the government.
Starmer confirmed in statements yesterday that he "will not resign," and that he is focused on "building a new team" to support the government, but he apologized for the controversial appointment.
The crisis began in September 2025 when U.S. authorities released a new batch of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, which revealed emails proving the ongoing relationship of Mandelson, a prominent Labour politician and close friend of Starmer, with Epstein even after his conviction in 2008 on charges of trafficking minors.
The documents showed that Mandelson maintained a friendship with Epstein despite being aware of his crimes, which sparked public outrage in Britain and led Starmer to dismiss Mandelson from his position as ambassador in Washington last October.
Epstein, who died in his prison cell in 2019 in a controversial suicide, managed a vast network of connections with global political and financial figures, and the documents released gradually led to multiple international scandals, including resignations in Norway and elsewhere.
Pressure on Starmer is mounting with the announcement of the British police opening an investigation into the allegations concerning Mandelson, amid calls from Labour MPs for an independent parliamentary inquiry.
