أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب أنه سيلتقي نظيره السوري أحمد الشرع خلال الأيام القادمة في البيت الأبيض.
ورد ترمب بالإيجاب حين سئل عن تلك الزيارة، وقال في تصريحات للصحفيين من على متن الطائرة الرئاسية، اليوم (الإثنين): «نعم قد يأتي..» إلى البيت الأبيض. وأضاف ترمب أن الشرع يعمل بشكل جيد، قائلاً: «سمعت أنه يقوم بعمل ممتاز». ولفت إلى أن «إدارته رفعت بعض العقوبات عن سورية من أجل منحها فرصة للبقاء»، وفق تعبيره.
وكان وزير الخارجية السوري أسعد الشيباني، أفاد أمس الأحد، بأن الشرع سيزور البيت الأبيض هذا الشهر، لبحث إعادة الإعمار في سورية. وأضاف أن هناك الكثير من المواضيع التي يتم الحديث عنها بداية من رفع العقوبات وفتح صفحة جديدة مع أمريكا. وقال: «نريد أن تكون هناك شراكة قوية جداً بين أمريكا وسورية».
بدوره، أفاد المبعوث الأمريكي الخاص توم برّاك السبت الماضي بأن الشرع سيزور واشنطن، فيما كشف مسؤول في البيت الأبيض أن الرئيس السوري سيزور واشنطن يوم 10 نوفمبر تقريبا.
في سياق آخر، أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي في مقابلة مع شبكة «سي بي إس» أنه لا يفكر في الترشح لولاية ثالثة، رغم قوله إن كثيرين يريدون بقاءه.
وقال ترمب: «لا أفكر في الأمر حتى. كثير من الناس يريدون مني الترشح لانتخابات 2028».
واعتبر أن الجمهوريين على عكس الديمقراطيين، لديهم العديد من المرشحين لرئاسة الولايات المتحدة، بينهم نائب الرئيس جيه دي فانس ووزير الخارجية ماركو روبيو.
ويأتي هذا الإعلان بعد تصريحات سابقة لترمب على مدى الأشهر الماضية ألمح فيها إلى إمكانية ترشحه لولاية رئاسية ثالثة.
يذكر أن التعديل الثاني والعشرين للدستور الأمريكي يحظر على الرؤساء الترشح لولاية ثالثة، ويعد تعديل الدستور (من أجل تمكين ترمب من الترشح) مسارا شاقا ومن غير المرجح أن ينجح، ولكن ترمب صرح لشبكة «إن بي سي نيوز» في وقت سابق بوجود «أساليب» تمكنه من خلالها العودة إلى الرئاسة.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with his Syrian counterpart Ahmad al-Shara during the coming days at the White House.
Trump responded positively when asked about the visit, stating in remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One today (Monday): "Yes, he may come..." to the White House. Trump added that al-Shara is doing well, saying: "I heard he is doing an excellent job." He noted that "his administration lifted some sanctions on Syria to give it a chance to survive," as he put it.
Syrian Foreign Minister As'ad al-Shaybani reported yesterday, Sunday, that al-Shara will visit the White House this month to discuss reconstruction in Syria. He added that there are many topics being discussed, starting from lifting sanctions and opening a new page with America. He said: "We want there to be a very strong partnership between America and Syria."
For his part, U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack stated last Saturday that al-Shara will visit Washington, while a White House official revealed that the Syrian president will visit Washington around November 10.
In another context, the U.S. president announced in an interview with CBS that he is not thinking about running for a third term, despite saying that many want him to stay.
Trump said: "I’m not even thinking about it. Many people want me to run for the 2028 election."
He considered that Republicans, unlike Democrats, have many candidates for the presidency, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
This announcement comes after previous statements by Trump over the past months in which he hinted at the possibility of running for a third presidential term.
It is worth noting that the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits presidents from running for a third term, and amending the Constitution (to enable Trump to run) is a difficult path and unlikely to succeed, but Trump previously stated to NBC News that there are "ways" for him to return to the presidency.
