In a new step in the escalating intelligence war, Ukrainian authorities announced today (Wednesday) the arrest of a former European military trainer on charges of espionage for Russia.

The Ukrainian security services stated in an official statement that the detainee "provided secret information about the locations of Ukrainian defense forces to their Russian enemy," noting that he was planning "terrorist acts targeting military facilities."

The statement added that the suspect transferred reports to Moscow related to "the training of the Ukrainian army and its defensive preparations," in cooperation with other foreign military trainers believed to have assisted him in gathering information.

The Ukrainian Security Service revealed that the accused was arrested at his home in the capital, Kyiv, where a pistol, ammunition, and sensitive military documents were found in his possession.

Investigations clarified that the accused arrived in Ukraine at the beginning of 2024 and later began passing secret information to Russia a few months after his arrival in the country.

According to the security agency, the detainee faces a prison sentence of 12 years if officially convicted of espionage and harming Ukrainian national security.
