Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today (Saturday) his intention to run again for the premiership in the upcoming elections scheduled for November 2026.
In response to a question from Israeli Channel 14: "Do you intend to run in the upcoming elections to become Prime Minister?", Netanyahu answered, "Yes."
Netanyahu leads the Likud party, which is the largest of the Israeli right-wing parties, and he has served the longest term as Prime Minister in Israel, holding the position for more than 18 years since 1996, albeit in separate terms.
The 75-year-old Netanyahu faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate cases known as Cases 1000, 2000, and 4000. He is the first sitting Prime Minister to be accused of committing crimes, with the charges being brought against him in 2019 related to gifts from wealthy friends and efforts to grant regulatory benefits to media moguls in exchange for favorable coverage.
He appeared in court for the first time in 2020 in corruption cases that sparked deep political divisions in Israel and led to political turmoil, complicating the formation of a stable majority in the parliament and resulting in five elections in less than four years. This situation also led some of Netanyahu's allies to abandon him, further increasing political divisions.
Netanyahu has not only faced domestic charges; the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him on November 21, 2024, on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which exacerbated his internal crisis, especially amid accusations from within of exploiting the genocide war to escape the internal crisis he is facing.
