أطاح وزير الحرب الأمريكي بيت هيجسيث، برئيس أركان البحرية جون هاريسون، وهو شخصية كانت تتمتع بنفوذ كبير في وزارة البحرية وأجرى تغييرات هيكلية واسعة عليها.
وقال متحدث باسم البنتاغون في بيان، أمس(الجمعة): إن جون هاريسون لن يواصل عمله رئيساً لأركان وزارة البحرية، نحن ممتنون لخدماته في الوزارة.
ونقلت مجلة «بوليتيكو»، عن مسؤولين في البنتاغون وآخر سابق، قولهما: إن هذه الإقالة المفاجئة جاءت في أعقاب تأكيد تعيين وكيل وزارة البحرية الجديد، هونج كاو، هذا الأسبوع.
وكان هاريسون، المعيّن من قبل إدارة الرئيس دونالد ترمب والذي انضم إلى الخدمة في شهر يناير الماضي، يتمتع بسلطة نادرة، كما أنه أجرى مع وزير البحرية جون فيلان تغييرات جذرية على مكتبيْ السياسة والميزانية في البحرية.
وتأتي إقالة رئيس أركان البحرية في وقت تعهد فيه ترمب بإنعاش صناعة بناء السفن لمواجهة المنافسة المحتدمة عالمياً. لكن أكبر برامج هذه الصناعة متأخرة سنوات عن موعدها، وسط تفوق لحلفاء الولايات المتحدة وخصومها في هذا المجال.
تغييرات واسعة في البنتاغون
إقالة رئيس أركان البحرية، تأتي في سياق تغييرات داخل وزارة الحرب الأمريكية، إذ أقال هيجسيث عدداً من كبار المساعدين في البنتاجون في وقت سابق من العام الحالي، بما في ذلك رئيس هيئة الأركان المشتركة، وقادة عسكريين للبحرية والقوات الجوية وخفر السواحل.
وقال خلال اجتماع ضم كبار قادة الجيش الأمريكي، الثلاثاء الماضي، إن مهمة الجيش الأولى ستكون الاستعداد للحرب والتحضير للنصر بلا هوادة، ولا تهاون لتحقيق هذا المسعى، لافتا إلى إصلاحات شاملة في القيادة العسكرية الأمريكية، فيما انتقد نهج الوزارة القديم وسياسات التنوع والشمول.
وتعهد وزير الحرب بإجراء المزيد من التغييرات القيادية في الجيش الأمريكي، مؤكدا أنها «مسألة حياة أو موت»، وأنه كلما تم الإسراع في اختيار الأشخاص المناسبين كان الطريق إلى السياسات الصحيحة أسرع، لأن الضباط والقيادات هم أساس السياسة الصحيحة.
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ousted Navy Chief of Staff John Harrison, a figure who held significant influence within the Navy Department and implemented extensive structural changes there.
A Pentagon spokesperson stated in a statement yesterday (Friday) that John Harrison will not continue in his role as Chief of Staff of the Navy Department, and we are grateful for his service in the department.
Politico magazine reported, citing officials at the Pentagon and a former official, that this sudden dismissal came following the confirmation of the new Under Secretary of the Navy, Hong Kao, this week.
Harrison, appointed by the Trump administration and who joined the service last January, held rare authority and made radical changes alongside Navy Secretary John F. Whalen to the policy and budget offices in the Navy.
The dismissal of the Chief of Staff of the Navy comes at a time when Trump has pledged to revitalize the shipbuilding industry to face fierce global competition. However, the largest programs in this industry are years behind schedule, amid a superiority of U.S. allies and adversaries in this field.
Wide-ranging Changes at the Pentagon
The dismissal of the Chief of Staff of the Navy occurs within the context of changes within the U.S. Department of War, as Hegseth has dismissed several senior aides at the Pentagon earlier this year, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and military leaders of the Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
During a meeting with senior U.S. Army leaders last Tuesday, he stated that the Army's primary mission will be to prepare for war and relentlessly prepare for victory, with no leniency in achieving this endeavor, pointing to comprehensive reforms in U.S. military leadership, while criticizing the department's old approach and diversity and inclusion policies.
The Secretary of War pledged to implement more leadership changes in the U.S. Army, emphasizing that it is a "matter of life and death," and that the faster the right people are chosen, the quicker the path to the right policies will be, as officers and leadership are the foundation of the correct policy.
