رفع وزير الخارجية والمغتربين السوري أسعد الشيباني، أمس (الجمعة)، علم بلاده فوق مبنى السفارة السورية في العاصمة الأمريكية واشنطن، وذلك بعد غياب أكثر من 25 عاماً.
وقال الشيباني: «هذه لحظة تاريخية تعبّر عن كل سوري ضحى لأجلها، وفي هذه اللحظة لا يمكن أن ننسى الشهداء وعوائل المفقودين والمصابين، ومن ضحى من أجل أن يرى سورية في هذا المكان»، موضحاً أنه بعد عقود من الغياب، يُرفع اليوم علم سورية عالياً فوق سفارتنا في واشنطن، بمشاعر الفخر والاعتزاز، أمثّل شعباً صمد، ووطناً لم ينكسر، سورية تعود.
حضور الجالية
ورفع العلم بحضور عدد من أبناء الجالية السورية في الولايات المتحدة، وذلك في إطار الزيارة التي بدأها الشيباني، (الخميس)، كونها الأولى منذ 25 عاماً لوزير خارجية سوري، وتشكّل محطة فارقة في مسار العلاقات السورية – الأمريكية بعد عقود من الانقطاع.
والتقى الوزير الشيباني في واشنطن عقب وصوله نائب وزير الخارجية الأمريكي كريستوفر لاندوا، وبحث معه العلاقات السورية – الأمريكية وآفاق تطويرها، كما التقى عدداً من أعضاء مجلسي الشيوخ والنواب، وعدداً من المسؤولين في وزارة الخزانة، وبحث معهم العلاقات السورية الأمريكية وآفاق تطويرها، ورفع العقوبات المفروضة على سورية.
ترمب يلتقي الشرع
ذكرت شبكة (سي بي إس) نيوز الأمريكية، أن الترتيب جارٍ لعقد لقاء بين الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب والرئيس السوري أحمد الشرع خلال اجتماعات الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة بعد أيام، وتحظى زيارة الشرع المرتقبة لأمريكا باهتمام دولي بالغ، كونه سيشارك في اجتماعات الدورة الـ80 للجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة التي ستعقد بين 22 - 30 من سبتمبر الجاري في مقر الأمم المتحدة بمدينة نيويورك لأول مرة.
The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad al-Shibani, raised his country's flag above the Syrian embassy in the American capital, Washington, yesterday (Friday), after an absence of more than 25 years.
Al-Shibani said: "This is a historic moment that expresses the feelings of every Syrian who sacrificed for it. In this moment, we cannot forget the martyrs, the families of the missing and the injured, and those who sacrificed to see Syria in this place." He explained that after decades of absence, the Syrian flag is being raised high today above our embassy in Washington, with feelings of pride and honor, representing a resilient people and an unbroken homeland; Syria is returning.
Community Presence
The flag was raised in the presence of a number of members of the Syrian community in the United States, as part of the visit that al-Shibani began on Thursday, marking the first visit by a Syrian foreign minister in 25 years, and representing a pivotal moment in Syrian-American relations after decades of severance.
Upon his arrival in Washington, Minister al-Shibani met with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, discussing Syrian-American relations and prospects for their development. He also met with several members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as a number of officials from the Treasury Department, discussing Syrian-American relations and prospects for their development, and the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria.
Trump Meets al-Shara
The American news network (CBS) reported that arrangements are underway for a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings in a few days. Al-Shara's anticipated visit to America is receiving significant international attention, as he will participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held from September 22 to 30 at the United Nations headquarters in New York for the first time.
