أفرجت طالبان، اليوم (الجمعة)، عن زوجين بريطانيين كانا محتجزين في أفغانستان منذ مطلع فبراير الماضي. وبحسب وزارة الخارجية القطرية، فإن المحتجزين بيتر رينولد وزوجته باربي رينولد وصلا الدوحة، وسيغادران إلى لندن في وقت لاحق.
وأعرب وزير الدولة بالخارجية محمد بن عبدالعزيز بن صالح الخليفي عن تقدير دولة قطر للتعاون المثمر الذي أبدته كل من حكومة تصريف الأعمال الأفغانية والمملكة المتحدة، فيما ذكرت مصادر إعلامية غربية أن قطر تفاوضت على مدى عدّة أشهر مع السلطات الأفغانية، وبتعاون وثيق مع الحكومة البريطانية.
احتجاز مدة 8 أشهر
ونقلت عن مصادر قولها: «طوال فترة احتجازهما، التي استمرت 8 أشهر وكانت في معظم الأحيان داخل حبس انفرادي، قدمت لهما السفارة القطرية في كابل دعما أساسيا تضمن إمكانية العرض على طبيب والحصول على أدوية والتواصل المنتظم مع عائلتيهما».
من جهتها، قالت الخارجية البريطانية إنها تشعر بالارتياح لسماع أن بيتر وباربي رينولدز لم يعودا محتجزين بأفغانستان، فيما قالت الحكومة الأفغانية إن الإفراج عن الزوجين البريطانيين تم بعد استكمال الإجراءات القضائية في أفغانستان.
واعتقلت الداخلية الأفغانية باربي وبيتر رينولدز في الأول من فبراير، وأعربت عائلتا الزوجين عن قلقهما البالغ إزاء صحتهما وقدرتهما على النجاة من الحجز.
اعتقال 4 أفراد
وكان متحدث باسم الداخلية الأفغانية قد أعلن أن السلطات الأفغانية اعتقلت 4 أفراد، هم بريطانيان، وأمريكية من أصل صيني، ومترجم فوري بصحبتهم، مبينا أن البريطانييْن كانا يعملان لدى منظمة غير حكومية بولاية باميان (وسط البلاد)، وأنه ألقي القبض عليهما بعد استخدامهما طائرة دون إبلاغ السلطات المحلية.
في حين، ذكرت صحيفة صنداي تايمز أن الزوجين كانا يديران مشاريع في مدارس بأفغانستان لمدة 18 عاما، وقررا البقاء هناك حتى بعد اعتلاء طالبان سدة السلطة في البلاد.
The Taliban released a British couple today (Friday) who had been detained in Afghanistan since early February. According to the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the detainees, Peter Reynolds and his wife Barbie Reynolds, have arrived in Doha and will depart for London later.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al-Khalifi expressed Qatar's appreciation for the fruitful cooperation shown by both the Afghan interim government and the United Kingdom, while Western media sources reported that Qatar had negotiated for several months with the Afghan authorities, in close cooperation with the British government.
Detention for 8 Months
Sources quoted as saying: "Throughout their detention, which lasted 8 months and was mostly in solitary confinement, the Qatari embassy in Kabul provided them with essential support that included access to a doctor, obtaining medication, and regular communication with their families."
For its part, the British Foreign Office stated that it is relieved to hear that Peter and Barbie Reynolds are no longer detained in Afghanistan, while the Afghan government stated that the release of the British couple occurred after completing judicial procedures in Afghanistan.
The Afghan Ministry of Interior detained Barbie and Peter Reynolds on February 1, and the families of the couple expressed their deep concern about their health and ability to survive detention.
Arrest of 4 Individuals
A spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Interior announced that Afghan authorities had arrested 4 individuals, including two Britons, an American of Chinese descent, and an interpreter accompanying them, indicating that the Britons were working for a non-governmental organization in Bamiyan Province (central Afghanistan), and that they were arrested after using a plane without notifying local authorities.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Times reported that the couple had been managing projects in schools in Afghanistan for 18 years and decided to stay there even after the Taliban took power in the country.
