قال مسؤول أمريكي وأربعة مصادر مطلعة إن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب سيعلن «إعادة تفسير» معاهدة للحد من التسلح يبلغ عمرها 38 عاماً، بحيث يتيح له ذلك بيع طائرات مسيّرة من طراز «ريبر» لدول خارجية. وذكرت «رويترز» أن إعادة تفسير المعاهدة، التي سيقوم بها ترمب، من شأنها إزالة العراقيل التي قد تعترض صفقة أمريكية لبيع أكثر من 100 مُسيّرة طراز MQ-9 للمملكة العربية السعودية.
وكانت السعودية قد طلبت تمكينها من شراء مسيّرات «ريبر» خلال الربيع الماضي. وإذا تحقق البيع فسيكون جزءاً من صفقة أُعلنت في مايو الماضي بـ142 مليار دولار. وسيلجأ ترمب إلى اعتبار المسيّرات طائرات، أسوة بمقاتلات اف-16، وليست أنظمة صاروخية كما تنص معاهدة نظام الحد من تكنولوجيا الصواريخ، الذي وقعته 35 دولة في عام 1987. وأشارت «رويترز» إلى أن أكبر الصفقات التي قد تعقب إعادة تفسير المعاهدة المشار إليها ستكون للمملكة العربية السعودية.
An American official and four informed sources said that U.S. President Donald Trump will announce a "reinterpretation" of a 38-year-old arms control treaty, allowing him to sell Reaper drones to foreign countries. Reuters reported that Trump's reinterpretation of the treaty would remove obstacles that could hinder a U.S. deal to sell more than 100 MQ-9 drones to Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia had requested permission to purchase Reaper drones last spring. If the sale goes through, it will be part of a deal announced last May worth $142 billion. Trump will consider the drones as aircraft, similar to F-16 fighters, rather than missile systems as stipulated by the missile technology control treaty signed by 35 countries in 1987. Reuters noted that the largest deals that could follow the reinterpretation of the mentioned treaty would be for Saudi Arabia.
