After a day of announcing the death of the Prime Minister of the coup government, Ahmed Ghaleb Al-Rahawi, along with 9 ministers and security officials, and the injury of others in an Israeli bombing on Thursday, Yemeni media and human rights activists revealed today (Sunday) that the Houthis launched campaigns and raids targeting the headquarters of international organizations and relief agencies, as well as the kidnapping of several of their employees in Sana'a.
Yemeni human rights sources stated that Houthi militants stormed the headquarters of the World Food Program and UNICEF, which are affiliated with the United Nations, in the capital Sana'a, and arrested several workers, noting that about 7 employees from the World Food Program and 3 others from UNICEF were taken from their workplace to an unknown location.
The sources indicated that the Houthis obstructed the work and activities of the two organizations, raising concerns and fears among Yemenis who are living in dire humanitarian conditions due to the systematic looting of their savings by the Houthis, which threatens a new humanitarian crisis.
The reasons for the storming of the headquarters and the arrest of the employees remain unclear at this time, and neither the Houthi group nor the UN organizations have issued any official comment regarding this matter.
Yemeni Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism Muammar Al-Eryani condemned in the strongest terms the frenzied campaign launched by the Houthi group against UN employees and its affiliated bodies, which has recently targeted the headquarters of UN organizations in Sana'a and several areas forcibly under their control.
Al-Eryani stated in posts on his account on "X": The information received indicates that the Houthis stormed the headquarters of the World Food Program in Sana'a, kidnapped two of its employees, and detained the rest inside, in addition to imposing house arrest on UN employees in their homes, kidnapping the guards of UNICEF, and launching similar kidnapping campaigns against employees in Al-Hudaydah governorate, the outcome of which is still unclear. He pointed out that these serious violations come amid the Houthis' continued detention of dozens of UN employees and international organizations, the office of the UN envoy, and foreign embassies, extending their approach of persecuting those working in the relief and humanitarian field, in a blatant challenge to international humanitarian law and all international norms and treaties. He added: We have repeatedly warned of the dangers of the continued operation of international organizations in areas under Houthi control, and we have called for relocating their headquarters to the temporary capital, Aden, where there is a safe and stable environment for their work, ensuring the continuation of their humanitarian services away from pressure and extortion.
Al-Eryani called on the international community to assume its responsibilities regarding these criminal practices and to take immediate action to ensure the safety of all UN employees. He also urged the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other countries around the world to take practical steps to classify the Houthi group as a global terrorist organization and to work on drying up its funding sources, putting an end to its systematic violations against the Yemeni people and those working in the humanitarian field.
Last year, the Houthis kidnapped several UN employees, the office of the UN envoy, and international and local organizations, and some of them are still in prison today, as they were accused of espionage on behalf of the United States.
In the same context, eyewitnesses confirmed that the Houthi group is in a state of alert and widespread security deployment in the streets of Sana'a since the early hours of the Israeli bombing that targeted a house in the Hadda neighborhood in the center of the capital, indicating that the situation in Sana'a is extremely tense.
