Palestinian and Hebrew media reported today (Sunday) conflicting reports regarding the assassination of Abu Ubaida, the official spokesperson for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a residential building in the Al-Rimal neighborhood west of Gaza City on Saturday evening.
Israeli media sources, including Channel "Kan 11" and the "Walla" website, reported that the Israeli army and the Shin Bet security service carried out a precise strike targeting a "central figure" in Hamas, with estimates suggesting that the target was Abu Ubaida.
However, Hamas and the al-Qassam Brigades have not officially confirmed his death, but the movement condemned the rumors, describing them as an Israeli attempt at psychological warfare.
A joint statement from the Israeli occupation army and the Shin Bet indicated that the operation was carried out using precise munitions and aerial reconnaissance to minimize harm to civilians, but Palestinian sources confirmed that the strike resulted in the deaths of seven civilians and injuries to others in the Al-Rimal neighborhood, which is densely populated, mostly by women, children, and displaced persons.
Other airstrikes targeted two residential apartments and tents of displaced persons in the Al-Rimal neighborhood and the Beach Camp, resulting in the deaths of 20 Palestinians and injuries to dozens.
Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, known by the nickname "Abu Ubaida," represented Hamas on social media, appearing masked without revealing his identity. Israel has attempted to target him multiple times, the last of which was in May 2025 when it was believed he was killed along with leader Mohammed Sinwar in Khan Younis, but he later appeared alive.
Palestinian sources conveyed to the "Al Arabiya" and "Al Hadath" networks that Abu Ubaida died in the airstrike, as a Palestinian source confirmed to Al Arabiya that members of Abu Ubaida's family and leaders from the al-Qassam Brigades confirmed his death after examining the body, but this information has not been officially verified, raising doubts about its accuracy, especially with Hamas's denial. Meanwhile, the Israeli army radio stated that an official announcement regarding Abu Ubaida's death is expected soon.
This airstrike comes amid an intensified Israeli escalation on Gaza, coinciding with the army declaring the city a dangerous combat zone and urging residents to evacuate to the Mawasi area to the south, as part of Operation Gideon Vehicles 2.
Abu Ubaida, in his last statements via the Telegram app before the airstrike, indicated that Israel's plans to occupy Gaza would be a disaster for its leadership, affirming the resistance's readiness to deliver harsh lessons. The fate of Abu Ubaida remains uncertain as of the writing of these words, amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes on the sector, which exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
