وسط تزايد الغضب الشعبي في عدد من الدول الغربية ضد جرائم الإبادة الإسرائيلية في غزة، دعت هولندا والسويد الاتحاد الأوروبي إلى تعليق اتفاق التجارة مع إسرائيل وذلك عشية اجتماع وزراء الخارجية والدفاع الأوروبيين في الدنمارك.
وشدد البلدان في رسالة مشتركة وُجهت إلى الاتحاد على اتخاذ عقوبات ضد وزراء إسرائيليين متطرفين يدعمون النشاطات الاستيطانية غير الشرعية في الضفة الغربية، محذرين من عواقب إقدام إسرائيل على تنفيذ المشروع الاستيطاني «E1» الذي يمثل انتهاكاً صارخاً للقانون الدولي، ويعدم أفق حل الدولتين.
وأكدت الدولتان أن الوضع في غزة مقزز للغاية ولا يطاق، إذ تعجز العبارات عن وصفه.
في غضون ذلك، دعا جيك سوليفان مستشار الأمن القومي في إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي السابق جو بايدن الديمقراطيين للتصويت ضد تصدير الأسلحة لإسرائيل، مؤكداً أن دعم حظر الأسلحة على إسرائيل موقف منطقي تماماً.
ولفت إلى أن مستقبل العلاقات مع الولايات المتحدة يعتمد على التغيير السياسي في إسرائيل وطابعها الديمقراطي، مبيناً أن بقاء الحكومة الإسرائيلية اليمينية المتطرفة وسياستها سيؤثر غالباً على العلاقة مع الولايات المتحدة.
تزامن ذلك مع تراجع الدعم الشعبي الأمريكي للتحالف العسكري مع إسرائيل بشكل غير مسبوق منذ بدء الحرب الإسرائيلية على غزة، مع ازدياد الانقسام الحزبي داخل الولايات المتحدة بشأن تقديم مساعدات عسكرية إضافية لتل أبيب، وفق مجلة «بولتيكو».
وأظهر استطلاع رأي أجرته جامعة «كوينيبياك» بين 21 و25 أغسطس الجاري، أن 60% من الناخبين الأمريكيين أعربوا عن رفضهم إرسال مساعدات عسكرية إلى إسرائيل، مقابل 32% فقط أيدوا تقديم مساعدات إضافية، وهو ما يمثل أعلى نسبة معارضة وأدنى مستوى دعم تشهده استطلاعات «كوينيبياك» منذ أكتوبر 2023.
وكان جميع أعضاء مجلس الأمن الدولي التابع للأمم المتحدة، باستثناء الولايات المتحدة، قد دعوا أمس، إلى وقف فوري ودائم وغير مشروط لإطلاق النار في غزة، والإفراج عن المحتجزين لدى حركة حماس، وزيادة المساعدات بشكل كبير في أنحاء القطاع.
وقال أعضاء المجلس، وعددهم 14، في بيان مشترك إن المجاعة في غزة أزمة من صنع البشر، محذرين من أن استخدام التجويع سلاحاً في الحرب محظور بموجب القانون الدولي الإنساني. وطالب أعضاء المجلس إسرائيل برفع جميع القيود المفروضة على إيصال المساعدات فوراً ودون شروط.
في غضون ذلك، ذكرت القناة 13 الإسرائيلية أمس، أنه يجري بلورة مقترح «أمريكي-إسرائيلي» مشترك لإنهاء الحرب على غزة، يضمن لإسرائيل شروطها المتعلقة بأمنها مستقبلاً، إضافة إلى إنهاء حكم حركة حماس في القطاع.
وأفادت قناة «كان» الإسرائيلية أن من المقرر أن يعقد المجلس الوزاري المصغر للشؤون الأمنية والسياسية «الكابنيت» اجتماعاً الأحد القادم، لمناقشة تطورات الحرب على غزة ومسار المفاوضات، خصوصاً بعد عدم إحراز أي تقدم في الاجتماع الذي عقد أخيراً في تل أبيب بين وفد إسرائيلي ومصري.
Amid rising public anger in several Western countries against Israeli genocide in Gaza, the Netherlands and Sweden called on the European Union to suspend its trade agreement with Israel on the eve of a meeting of European foreign and defense ministers in Denmark.
The two countries emphasized in a joint letter to the Union the need to impose sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers who support illegal settlement activities in the West Bank, warning of the consequences of Israel proceeding with the "E1" settlement project, which represents a blatant violation of international law and eliminates the prospect of a two-state solution.
The two countries confirmed that the situation in Gaza is extremely shocking and unbearable, as words fail to describe it.
Meanwhile, Jake Sullivan, national security advisor in the administration of former President Joe Biden, urged Democrats to vote against arms exports to Israel, asserting that supporting an arms embargo on Israel is a completely logical position.
He pointed out that the future of relations with the United States depends on political change in Israel and its democratic nature, indicating that the continued existence of the far-right Israeli government and its policies will likely affect the relationship with the United States.
At the same time, American public support for the military alliance with Israel has declined unprecedentedly since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza, with increasing partisan division within the United States regarding additional military aid to Tel Aviv, according to Politico magazine.
A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University between August 21 and 25 showed that 60% of American voters expressed their opposition to sending military aid to Israel, compared to only 32% who supported providing additional aid, representing the highest level of opposition and the lowest level of support recorded in Quinnipiac polls since October 2023.
All members of the United Nations Security Council, except for the United States, called yesterday for an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, the release of those held by Hamas, and a significant increase in aid throughout the sector.
The 14 members of the council stated in a joint statement that the famine in Gaza is a man-made crisis, warning that using starvation as a weapon in war is prohibited under international humanitarian law. The council members demanded that Israel immediately lift all restrictions on the delivery of aid unconditionally.
Meanwhile, Israeli Channel 13 reported yesterday that a joint "U.S.-Israeli" proposal is being formulated to end the war in Gaza, ensuring Israel's conditions regarding its future security, in addition to ending Hamas's rule in the sector.
Israeli Channel Kan reported that the security and political cabinet is scheduled to hold a meeting next Sunday to discuss developments in the war on Gaza and the course of negotiations, especially after no progress was made in the recent meeting held in Tel Aviv between an Israeli and an Egyptian delegation.
