A source in the Sudanese Civil Defense confirmed today (Wednesday) the death of nine people due to the collapse of their homes in the city of Damer in the Nile River State, north of the capital Khartoum, as a result of the floods that swept through the area, noting that the water is still surrounding five neighborhoods of the city.
Heavy seasonal rains turned into torrents that caused traffic disruptions after parts of the road connecting Khartoum and Atbara in the Nile River State were submerged. In the Gedaref State in eastern Sudan, the government department concerned with seasonal rains reported that 600 homes were damaged, and approximately 8,500 acres of agricultural land were flooded.
The Autumn Emergency Room in Gedaref State reported that the floods led to the isolation of villages and the cutting off of main roads, calling for urgent intervention from humanitarian organizations to provide food, shelter, and medicine for the affected in the cities of Western Qalabat and Qal' al-Nahl.
The Sudanese High Authority for Meteorology warned yesterday (Tuesday) the residents of the states of Khartoum, Nile River, and White Nile, announcing that these areas have entered a high-risk phase due to heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and wind activity.
The International Organization for Migration announced that heavy rains and floods swept through the city of Dar es Salaam in North Darfur State, displacing 87 families, explaining that the displaced fled from the village of Abiyat Jalidat in the Um Kadada locality, while hundreds of homes were damaged.
Field teams estimated the destruction of 182 homes and several shops, while 210 homes were partially damaged.
