أصدرت جامعة فيلانوفا في ولاية بنسلفانيا الأمريكية تحذيراً عاجلاً (الخميس) من وجود مطلق نار محتمل في كلية الحقوق التابعة لها (تشارلز ويدجر للحقوق)، ما أدى إلى حالة من الذعر والهلع بين الطلاب وأعضاء هيئة التدريس أثناء فعاليات اليوم الأول من التوجيه الطلابي.
وتلقت إدارة الأمن العام في الجامعة بلاغاً مجهولاً الساعة 4:30 عصراً بتوقيت شرق الولايات المتحدة، يفيد بوجود مطلق نار في مبنى سكاربا هول التابع لكلية الحقوق، مع ادعاءات بوجود ضحية مصابة على الأقل، وأصدرت الجامعة على الفور تنبيهاً، عبر نظام «نوف للتنبيه»، يطالب الطلاب والموظفين بالابتعاد عن مبنى كلية الحقوق، وإغلاق الأبواب وتحصين أماكنهم، مع اتباع إجراءات «الجري، الاختباء، القتال».
واستجابت قوات الشرطة المحلية في بلدة رادنور، إلى جانب شرطة ولاية بنسلفانيا، ووكالات فيدرالية مثل مكتب الكحول والتبغ والأسلحة النارية والمتفجرات، بسرعة كبيرة، حيث هرعت إلى الحرم الجامعي لتفتيش المباني، وأظهرت مقاطع فيديو على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي طلاباً يركضون في حالة ذعر، بينما توجد كراسٍ متناثرة في منطقة مفتوحة حيث كان يُعقد قداس التوجيه.
وبعد تفتيش دقيق للحرم الجامعي، أعلنت الجامعة الساعة الـ6:00 مساءً أن الحادثة كانت «خدعة قاسية»، وأنه لا يوجد مطلق نار، ولا إصابات، ولا أدلة على وجود أسلحة نارية في الحرم الجامعي. وأكد رئيس الجامعة القس بيتر إم. دونوهو في بيان للطلاب والمجتمع الجامعي: «بفضل الله، لم يُصب أحد، لكن هذه الأحداث هزت مجتمعنا بأكمله».
وأضاف أن الحادثة وقعت خلال قداس التوجيه للترحيب بالطلاب الجدد، ما زاد من شدة التجربة المرعبة، في حين وصف حاكم ولاية بنسلفانيا جوش شابيرو الحادثة بأنها عملية «سواتينغ»، وهي خدعة غير قانونية تتضمن الإبلاغ الكاذب عن تهديدات خطيرة لإثارة استجابة شرطية واسعة النطاق. وأشار شابيرو إلى أنه أمر شرطة الولاية بالعمل مع الشركاء المحليين والفيدراليين للعثور على المسؤولين عن هذا التقرير الكاذب ومحاسبتهم.
وتعد جامعة فيلانوفا، وهي جامعة كاثوليكية خاصة تقع في ضواحي فيلادلفيا، بنسلفانيا، واحدة من أبرز المؤسسات التعليمية في الولايات المتحدة، حيث تأسست عام 1842، وهي الجامعة الأوغسطينية الوحيدة في البلاد، واكتسبت اهتماماً إضافياً هذا العام كونها الجامعة التي تخرج فيها البابا ليو الرابع عشر، أول بابا من الولايات المتحدة (خريج دفعة 1977). وتضم الجامعة نحو 6700 طالب جامعي بدوام كامل، و3100 طالب دراسات عليا وقانون، وفقاً لموقعها الرسمي.
وتأتي هذه الحادثة في سياق تزايد حوادث «السواتينغ» في الولايات المتحدة، حيث تُستخدم هذه الخدع لإثارة الفوضى واستنزاف موارد الشرطة، وفي اليوم نفسه شهدت جامعة تينيسي في تشاتانوغا حادثة مشابهة تم تأكيدها لاحقاً كخدعة.
Villanova University in Pennsylvania, USA, issued an urgent warning (on Thursday) about a potential active shooter at its law school (Charles Widger School of Law), leading to panic and fear among students and faculty during the first day of orientation activities.
The university's public safety department received an anonymous report at 4:30 PM Eastern Time, indicating that there was an active shooter in the Scarpa Hall building of the law school, with claims of at least one victim injured. The university immediately issued an alert through the "NOVA Alert" system, urging students and staff to stay away from the law school building, lock doors, and secure their locations, while following "run, hide, fight" procedures.
Local police forces in Radnor, along with Pennsylvania State Police and federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded very quickly, rushing to the campus to search the buildings. Videos on social media showed students running in panic, while chairs were scattered in an open area where the orientation mass was being held.
After a thorough search of the campus, the university announced at 6:00 PM that the incident was a "hoax," and that there was no active shooter, no injuries, and no evidence of firearms on campus. University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue stated in a message to students and the university community: "Thanks be to God, no one was injured, but these events have shaken our entire community."
He added that the incident occurred during the orientation mass welcoming new students, which intensified the terrifying experience, while Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro described the incident as a "swatting" operation, an illegal hoax involving false reports of serious threats to provoke a large police response. Shapiro noted that he had directed state police to work with local and federal partners to find those responsible for this false report and hold them accountable.
Villanova University, a private Catholic university located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the leading educational institutions in the United States, founded in 1842. It is the only Augustinian university in the country and gained additional attention this year as the alma mater of Pope Leo XIII, the first pope from the United States (Class of 1977). The university has approximately 6,700 full-time undergraduate students and 3,100 graduate and law students, according to its official website.
This incident comes amid a rise in "swatting" incidents in the United States, where these hoaxes are used to create chaos and drain police resources. On the same day, the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga experienced a similar incident that was later confirmed to be a hoax.
