U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described today (Saturday) the relationship between Washington and Islamabad as a "genuine friendship that is evolving," emphasizing that it is strengthened by Pakistan's contribution to the negotiation efforts to end the war with Iran.

Hegseth noted, during his participation in the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, the role of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir in the peace negotiations, adding: "There is an unexpected development and a genuine friendship taking shape."

He pointed out that this was also reflected in U.S. President Donald Trump's ability to "mediate to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan" during their conflict last year.

Hegseth considered India a "key pillar" for achieving regional balance in South Asia, affirming that New Delhi is working to "modernize its military capabilities to bear its share of security burdens, especially in the Indian Ocean."

The U.S. Defense Secretary reaffirmed the United States' commitment to "joint weapon manufacturing" with India.

In response to a question about India's long-range missile capabilities, Hegseth said: "India and Pakistan are likely viewing each other as a source of threat, and are therefore seeking to develop missile systems."

For his part, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Pakistan and its efforts in mediating to end the war with Iran, appreciating the constructive role Islamabad continues to play in support of President Donald Trump's vision for peace in the Middle East.

Rubio expressed his gratitude to Pakistan for its mediation efforts with Iran. According to the U.S. State Department, Rubio agreed with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar during a meeting in Washington yesterday (Friday) on "the importance of joint action to enhance an effective partnership that contributes to achieving security and prosperity" for both countries.

The department reported that the two ministers exchanged views on regional and international developments, noting that Dar expressed his admiration for Trump's vision and commitment to peace, including his support for a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, and sending a high-level delegation led by Vice President J.D. Vance to Pakistan to participate in the Islamabad peace talks.
