A number of Lebanese army personnel were killed in an explosion that occurred in the south of the country today (Saturday), with media reports indicating that there were 6 fatalities among the Lebanese army and several other injuries.
According to the Lebanese news agency, unexploded ordnance from the remnants of the Israeli aggression in the south exploded while an engineering team from the Lebanese army was dismantling some shells in the area between the towns of Majdal Zoun and Zibqin in the Tyre district, with reports of casualties and injuries.
For his part, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam commented on the incident, stating: "With great sorrow, Lebanon mourns the sons of our valiant army who fell as martyrs in the south while performing their national duty." He added that all of Lebanon, as a state and a people, bows in reverence to their sacrifices and their pure blood, which reaffirms that our army is the bulwark of security, the fortress of sovereignty, and the protector of national unity and its legitimate institutions."
The Lebanese army had previously warned against jeopardizing the country's security amid the challenges it faces, affirming that it will not allow any disruption of security or harm to civil peace.
The army leadership stated in a statement issued on its website that "in light of the exceptional challenges facing Lebanon at this time, especially the continued Israeli aggressions and violations of national sovereignty, alongside the delicate security situation, calls have emerged from individuals via social media for protests, and the dissemination of fabricated videos aimed at inciting tension among citizens."
The army leadership warned citizens against jeopardizing the country's security through uncalculated actions. It added that while the army respects the peaceful expression of opinion, it will not allow any disruption of security or harm to civil peace, nor will it tolerate road blockages or encroachments on public and private property. It emphasized the need for citizens and all parties to act responsibly during this difficult phase and the importance of their unity and solidarity to overcome the dangers facing our country.
