كشف وزير الخارجية في ليتوانيا كيستوتيس بودريس، في وقت متأخر أمس (الثلاثاء)، طلب بلاده من حلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو) تعزيز دفاعاتها الجوية بعد أن اخترقت طائرتان مسيرتان عسكريتان مجالها الجوي قادمتين من بيلاروسيا خلال أقل من شهر.
وقال بودريس للصحافيين: «يجب ألا تتحمل ليتوانيا هذه المسؤولية وحدها، لأننا ندافع عن الجناح الشرقي لحلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو)». وجاء في رسالة مشتركة من وزيري الخارجية والدفاع في ليتوانيا إلى الأمين العام لحلف شمال الأطلسي مارك روته أن الحلف: «يجب أن يُظهر استعداده للدفاع عن كل سنتيمتر من أراضيه»، فيما أوضح الحلف في تعليق بحسب وسائل إعلام غربية أنه يراقب الموقف عن كثب. وتشترك ليتوانيا، عضو حلف الأطلسي والاتحاد الأوروبي، في حدود مع روسيا وبيلاورسيا الحليفة المقربة لموسكو.
وكان مسؤول ليتواني كبير قد قال (الجمعة) إن الولايات المتحدة ستبقي على كتيبة مدرعة متمركزة منذ 2019 داخل ليتوانيا بالقرب من الحدود مع بيلاروسيا حتى مطلع 2026، فيما قالت وزيرة الدفاع دوفيلي ساكالينيه إن ليتوانيا تعتقد أن الطائرة كانت موجهة من روسيا لتنفيذ هجوم في أوكرانيا، لكنها انحرفت عن مسارها بفعل أنظمة الدفاع الأوكرانية.
وذكر رئيس أركان الجيش في ليتوانيا داينيوس باسكيفيسيوس أنه عُثر على الطائرة محطمة في منطقة تدريب عسكرية على بُعد نحو 100 كيلومتر من الحدود مع بيلاورسيا، وكانت تحمل 2 كيلوغرام من المتفجرات.
The Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis, revealed late yesterday (Tuesday) that his country has requested NATO to bolster its air defenses after two military drones from Belarus breached its airspace in less than a month.
Landsbergis told reporters, "Lithuania should not bear this responsibility alone, as we are defending the eastern flank of NATO." A joint letter from the Lithuanian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the alliance "must demonstrate its readiness to defend every inch of its territory," while NATO clarified in a comment to Western media that it is closely monitoring the situation. Lithuania, a member of both NATO and the European Union, shares borders with Russia and Belarus, a close ally of Moscow.
A senior Lithuanian official said on Friday that the United States will maintain an armored battalion stationed in Lithuania near the border with Belarus until early 2026, while Defense Minister Arvydas Anušauskas stated that Lithuania believes the drone was directed from Russia to carry out an attack in Ukraine, but it deviated from its course due to Ukrainian defense systems.
The Chief of Staff of the Lithuanian Army, General Valdemaras Rupšys, mentioned that the drone was found crashed in a military training area about 100 kilometers from the border with Belarus, and it was carrying 2 kilograms of explosives.
