Two agencies concerned with combating corruption in Ukraine announced today (Saturday) a major scheme for embezzlement involving the purchase of military drones and signal jamming systems at inflated prices, confirming in a statement that a member of parliament, two local officials, and several members of the National Guard received bribes.
The statement indicated that the essence of the scheme involved entering into government contracts with supply companies at deliberately inflated prices, adding that the perpetrators received bribes amounting to 30% of the contract cost.
The statement clarified that four of those involved were arrested, but did not disclose their names or positions.
The accusations from the two agencies come two days after they resumed independent operations following massive protests.
The Ukrainian parliament had restored (on Thursday) the independence of the investigative and prosecutorial agencies concerned with combating embezzlement in Ukraine (NABU) and (SAPO) after a decision to withdraw their independence led to the largest demonstrations in the country since the war began in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that there can be no tolerance for corruption, explaining that collective efforts are clearly underway to expose corruption, which will lead to a fair judicial ruling in this case, affirming that he listened to the people's anger and presented a bill that restores the previous independence of the two agencies, which was voted on by parliament.
Zelensky stressed the necessity for anti-corruption institutions to operate independently, ensuring that the law passed provides them with all opportunities to effectively combat corruption.
