After about 9 months since the fall of the previous regime, Syrian security forces in the Latakia governorate arrested one of Bashar al-Assad's regime members, known as the "Assad Sniper."
Local sources announced that Muhammad Dawood Nasser, nicknamed the "Assad Sniper," worked as a sniper in the former regime's forces and killed dozens of Syrians.
Syrian activists on social media reported that Dawood is considered one of the instruments of repression that committed horrific crimes against the Syrian people, and he is being pursued by accusations of committing violations during his time as a sniper.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior stated that Dawood operated in the Turkmen Mountain area, then moved to the village of Al-Zawiqaat in the Kurdish Mountains overlooking the Kabina Mountains, and his crimes included mutilating corpses.
It confirmed that he is one of the leaders and orchestrators of the coastal events that witnessed bloody fighting and sectarian purges against members of the Alawite sect in the coastal cities of Syria.
According to the Ministry of Interior's statement, the accused is involved in terrorist acts, as he was responsible for targeting security checkpoints and military positions, in addition to being the leader of the group that attacked the Al-Zubar checkpoint in the countryside of Latakia on the road leading to Turkmen Mountain.
Activists circulated images of Dawood during the Assad era, with his sniper rifle, and he appeared in some photos while posing with the corpses he had killed.
He was also seen in one photo next to a human skull, and in another, he was near a corpse holding one of its jaws.
Syrians shared news of the accused's arrest and referral for investigation through social media, affirming that such actions represent a better future, especially since they are the ideal way for transitional justice that they dream of through punishing the remnants of the previous regime and the perpetrators of crimes after investigating and convicting them through legitimate means.
