في خطوة دبلوماسية جريئة، تنطلق اليوم (الإثنين) أعمال مؤتمر دولي في مقر الأمم المتحدة، برعاية مشتركة من السعودية وفرنسا، لبحث سبل تفعيل حل الدولتين بين الفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين، وسط غياب لافت للولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل اللتين قاطعتا الحدث.
ويهدف المؤتمر إلى صياغة خارطة طريق تؤدي إلى قيام دولة فلسطينية مستقلة، في إطار مبادرة أممية شاملة تعيد إحياء المسار السياسي المجمد منذ سنوات.
ويأتي المؤتمر بعد تأجيله في يونيو الماضي عقب توتر إقليمي بسبب هجوم إسرائيلي على إيران، بينما يسبق إعلانًا فرنسيًا مرتقبًا خلال الجمعية العامة القادمة للأمم المتحدة بالاعتراف بالدولة الفلسطينية.
وأكد وزير الخارجية الفرنسي جان نويل بارو أن بلاده ستقود دعوة دولية للاعتراف الجماعي بفلسطين، مع إطلاق نداء دولي من نيويورك بحلول 21 سبتمبر. ولفت إلى توقعات بإدانة حركة حماس والمطالبة بنزع سلاحها كجزء من أي حل دائم.
في المقابل، وصفت الولايات المتحدة المؤتمر بأنه «هدية لحماس»، معلنة رفضها المشاركة، كما انسحبت إسرائيل رسميًا، مؤكدة أن الأولوية يجب أن تكون لإدانة حماس وإعادة الرهائن.
ورغم الاعتراضات، يحظى المؤتمر بدعم أممي واسع، استنادًا إلى قرار الجمعية العامة الذي صوّتت لصالحه 143 دولة في مايو الماضي، في وقت لا تزال فيه واشنطن تستخدم «الفيتو» لمنع منح فلسطين العضوية الكاملة في الأمم المتحدة.
In a bold diplomatic move, an international conference is kicking off today (Monday) at the United Nations headquarters, co-sponsored by Saudi Arabia and France, to discuss ways to activate the two-state solution between Palestinians and Israelis, amid a notable absence of the United States and Israel, which have boycotted the event.
The conference aims to formulate a roadmap leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, within the framework of a comprehensive UN initiative that seeks to revive the political process that has been stalled for years.
This conference comes after it was postponed in June due to regional tensions following an Israeli attack on Iran, while it precedes an anticipated French announcement during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly regarding the recognition of the Palestinian state.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed that his country will lead an international call for collective recognition of Palestine, with an international appeal from New York by September 21. He noted expectations for a condemnation of Hamas and a call for its disarmament as part of any lasting solution.
In contrast, the United States described the conference as a "gift to Hamas," announcing its refusal to participate, while Israel officially withdrew, asserting that the priority should be to condemn Hamas and secure the release of hostages.
Despite the objections, the conference enjoys broad UN support, based on a General Assembly resolution that was voted in favor by 143 countries last May, while Washington continues to use its veto to prevent Palestine from gaining full membership in the United Nations.
