After more than 30 years, Turkish authorities have released Veysi Aktaş, a companion of the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, Abdullah Öcalan, coinciding with a visit by a delegation from the "Equality and Democracy of Peoples" party, which supports the Kurds, to Öcalan in his prison yesterday (Friday), to advance the peace process that began in late 2024.
Aktaş spent more than 30 years in prison, the last 10 of which were with Öcalan in Imralı prison, where the latter was transferred during the previous peace process between 2013 and 2015, which was not successful for both sides.
According to Turkish and Kurdish media, Ankara released Öcalan's companion to move forward with the peace process with the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
Previously, Turkish authorities had refused to release Öcalan's companion despite him having served his entire sentence, which exceeded 30 years. Aktaş spent 10 years in the highly secure Imralı prison, according to the Fırat News Agency, which is close to the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
Turkish media speculated that the release of Öcalan's companion coincides with improving the detention conditions of the founder of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, whose leaders in the Qandil Mountains, the party's stronghold, responded to calls for the dissolution of the party and laying down arms, which occurred on May 12 of last year when the party announced its self-dissolution and burned its weapons in a symbolic ceremony this month in the city of Sulaymaniyah, the second largest city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
It is worth noting that the "Equality and Democracy of Peoples" party, which is the third largest party in Turkey, plays a mediating role between Ankara and Öcalan, after Ankara entered negotiations with him regarding finding a solution to the Kurdish issue in late 2024.
Turkish authorities have allowed a delegation from the "Equality and Democracy of Peoples" party several times to meet Öcalan in his prison to discuss how to form a parliamentary committee to resolve the Kurdish issue in Turkey. Ankara allowed Öcalan's family to meet him last June after years of prohibition.
