In the presence of Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, the Saudi-Syrian Investment Forum commenced today (Thursday) in the Syrian capital, Damascus. Saudi Investment Minister Khalid al-Falih announced the Kingdom's commitment to developing relations with Syria, particularly in the economic and investment fields, with the participation of more than 20 government entities and 100 private sector companies at the forum.
Al-Falih stated in a speech delivered at the investment forum: "In a move that reflects the Kingdom's commitment to economic relations with Syria, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman has urgently ordered the establishment of a Saudi-Syrian Business Council, with membership at the highest levels and including prominent businessmen," expressing his sincere gratitude and appreciation to Syria, on behalf of the large Saudi delegation that came to Damascus, for the feelings of affection, celebration, and generosity it has shown.
He added: "I convey to Syria and its beloved people the greetings of the King and the Crown Prince, and their affirmation of the Kingdom's steadfast and supportive position towards our sister Syria in its blessed journey towards growth, prosperity, and sustainable development," announcing the signing of 47 agreements and memoranda of understanding between the two sides, with a total value of nearly 24 billion Saudi riyals (about 6.4 billion dollars), including the establishment of three new cement factories.
He pointed out that these agreements represent a qualitative leap in economic relations between the two countries, clarifying that these deals will cover multiple vital areas primarily focused on the energy, real estate, industry, and infrastructure sectors, in addition to financial services, health, agriculture, communications, information technology, contracting, and education.
He added: "In this forum, we are not working to build new bridges because the close social, economic, and cultural relations have connected our two countries for a long time, as the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant were two important links in global trade," indicating that the relationship will continue to grow and prosper over time; Saudi Arabia and Syria are two sides of the same political, economic, and social coin.
Al-Falih invited Syrian investors to visit Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that "the field is open for them to seek investment opportunities, and we will provide them with all the support," praising the positive and active role played by more than 2,600 Syrian entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia.
Regarding the telecommunications and information technology sector, the Saudi Investment Minister said: "The forum will witness the launch of cooperation between the Ministry of Communications in Syria and several Saudi telecommunications companies aimed at developing infrastructure and enhancing cybersecurity capabilities, with agreements in this area valued at 4 billion Saudi riyals," adding: "In the agriculture sector, we look forward to working in Syria to develop joint quality projects, including model farms and manufacturing industries. In the financial services and financing sector, we will witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Saudi Trading Group and the Damascus Securities Exchange to enhance cooperation in the field of financial technologies."
Al-Falih praised the bold, positive, and courageous steps taken by the Syrian government to improve the investment climate and facilitate investment procedures, noting that the Saudi company "Bayt Al-Ibaa" will sign a billion-dollar agreement to build a distinguished residential and commercial project in Homs, pledging that the project's returns will support social initiatives for the Syrian people.
