At least 19 Bangladeshis were killed today (Monday) due to the crash of a training aircraft belonging to the air force, after it collided with an educational complex that includes a college and a school in the capital, Dhaka, according to the fire department official in Bangladesh.
A doctor at the National Institute of Burns and Cosmetic Surgery confirmed to reporters that more than 50 people, including children and adults, were taken to the hospital with burns. The head of the burns unit at the hospital affiliated with Dhaka Medical College, Bidhan Sarkar, who received some of the victims, stated: "A third-grade student was brought in dead, and 3 others aged between 12 and 14, along with a 40-year-old victim, were admitted to the hospital."
The army's public relations department stated in a statement: "A training aircraft of the F-7 BGI model belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force crashed in Uttara," explaining that the aircraft took off at 13:06 local time (07:06 GMT).
Bangladeshi citizens circulated video clips taken after the incident showing a massive fire near a park, with a thick column of smoke rising from it, while a crowd of people watched the incident from a distance.
The interim government head in Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, stated that necessary measures will be taken to investigate the cause of the incident and ensure all types of assistance are provided, adding: "The losses incurred by the air force, students, parents, teachers, staff, and others in this incident are irreplaceable."
The local newspaper "Prothom Alo" reported that initial reports indicate that the aircraft crashed onto the roof of a restaurant at the college.
It is noteworthy that this incident came more than a month after an aircraft belonging to the Indian airline "Air India" crashed over a medical college in the neighboring city of Ahmedabad, resulting in the deaths of 241 out of 242 passengers on board and 19 people on the ground, marking the worst aviation disaster in the world in the past 10 years.
