The Syrian Minister of Defense, Engineer Major General Marhaf Abu Qasra, directed the army in the Suwayda Governorate today (Monday) to protect civilians and prevent lawless gangs from harming them and destabilizing their security.
The Syrian news agency "SANA" quoted Abu Qasra as saying: "Protect public and private property from the actions of thieves and those with weak morals. Any negligence will be recorded, and any leniency will be held accountable. Strive to restore stability to the areas of Suwayda, and be a support to those who need your assistance, as we have always known you: protectors of the people, not against them."
The Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that 18 soldiers were killed in attacks by armed groups in Suwayda.
The Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria has witnessed rapid security developments since Saturday evening, following violent clashes between local Druze groups and armed members of Bedouin tribes, resulting in the deaths of more than 30 people and injuries to around 100 others.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed in a statement that the entry of internal security forces and units from the Ministry of Defense into Suwayda Governorate was part of their national mission to stop the bloodshed, maintain security, and impose stability, following the rapid developments that occurred in the region over the past two days.
The ministry explained that what happened constitutes a serious threat to civil peace and public security, and contradicts the law and the values of coexistence and national unity that form the foundation of the Syrian state. It emphasized that its role is limited to maintaining security and protecting civilians without bias toward any party, while working to fully restore stability to ensure the protection of citizens' lives.
The ministry expressed its full respect for the rights of all segments and components of the Syrian people, reiterating its commitment to protect them and ensure their safety and security, urging all parties to exercise national responsibility.
It pointed out that any dispute should be resolved through state institutions and the judiciary, calling on citizens to cooperate with security forces to ensure a gradual return to calm, preserve civil peace, and protect lives and property.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates had previously expressed its concern and sorrow regarding the escalation in Suwayda, confirming that security forces were subjected to ambushes and kidnapping attempts after their arrival in the city in an attempt to contain the tension and clashes erupting between the tribes.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry, in a statement reported by the Syrian news agency (SANA), indicated that the operations that occurred against security forces indicate the presence of organized entities seeking to drag the governorate into serious security chaos and prevent state institutions from imposing control and stability.
