أعلن وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو أن قمة مرتقبة بين الرئيس دونالد ترمب والزعيم الصيني شي جين بينغ باتت وشيكة، وذلك بعد لقائه الأول وجهاً لوجه مع نظيره الصيني وانغ يي في ماليزيا اليوم (الجمعة).
ووصف روبيو لقاءه مع وانغ يي بأنه «بنّاء وإيجابي للغاية»، مشيراً إلى وجود رغبة قوية من الجانبين لعقد قمة على مستوى القادة.
وأكد روبيو أن البلدين سيعملان على إيجاد تاريخ مقبول للطرفين لعقد هذه القمة، التي قد تسهم في تخفيف التوترات بين الولايات المتحدة والصين بعد هدنة تجارية تم التوصل إليها أخيراً.
جاءت هذه التصريحات، بحسب وكالة «بلومبيرغ»، على هامش اجتماع عقد في كوالالمبور برعاية رابطة دول جنوب شرق آسيا (آسيان).
وأشار روبيو إلى أن هذا اللقاء يُعد من أبرز التفاعلات رفيعة المستوى بين البلدين منذ عودة ترمب إلى البيت الأبيض في يناير.
وأضاف أن الحوار الإيجابي بين كبيري الدبلوماسيين يعزز فرص عقد قمة قيادية قد تسهم في تهدئة التوترات، رغم استمرار وجود نقاط خلاف.
وقال روبيو: «نحن دولتان كبيرتان وقويتان، ومن الطبيعي أن تكون هناك قضايا نختلف بشأنها، لكن هناك مجالات للتعاون المحتمل.
وعند سؤاله عن مجالات التعاون المحددة، أوضح أن الولايات المتحدة ستعمل مع الجانب الصيني وستعلن عن التفاصيل لاحقاً.
وأشار إلى أن المحادثات التجارية الأخيرة في لندن الشهر الماضي كانت إيجابية، حيث أكدت اتفاقية لتعليق الرسوم الجمركية المرتفعة على المنتجات الصينية لمدة 90 يوماً.
من جانبه، لم يصدر الجانب الصيني أي تعليق رسمي حتى الآن بشأن هذا اللقاء.
وفي الأسابيع الأخيرة، ظهرت مؤشرات على أن الطرفين بدآ ينفذان تعهداتهما السابقة، حيث وافقت الصين على استئناف شحنات المعادن النادرة، بينما عرضت الولايات المتحدة تخفيف بعض القيود على تصدير الإيثان، وبرمجيات تصميم الرقائق، ومكونات محركات الطائرات.
وأفاد وزير التجارة الأمريكي هوارد لوتنيك بأن الجولة القادمة من المحادثات التجارية ستبدأ مطلع أغسطس، قبيل انتهاء فترة تعليق الرسوم الجمركية.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that a much-anticipated summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping is imminent, following his first face-to-face meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Malaysia today (Friday).
Rubio described his meeting with Wang Yi as "constructive and very positive," noting a strong desire from both sides to hold a leaders' summit.
Rubio confirmed that the two countries will work to find an acceptable date for both parties to hold this summit, which could help ease tensions between the United States and China after a recently reached trade truce.
These statements, according to Bloomberg, came on the sidelines of a meeting held in Kuala Lumpur under the auspices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Rubio pointed out that this meeting is one of the most significant high-level interactions between the two countries since Trump returned to the White House in January.
He added that the positive dialogue between the two top diplomats enhances the chances of a leadership summit that could help calm tensions, despite ongoing points of disagreement.
Rubio said, "We are two large and powerful countries, and it is natural that there are issues we disagree on, but there are areas for potential cooperation."
When asked about specific areas of cooperation, he clarified that the United States will work with the Chinese side and will announce the details later.
He noted that the recent trade talks in London last month were positive, as they confirmed an agreement to suspend high tariffs on Chinese products for 90 days.
For its part, the Chinese side has not yet issued any official comment regarding this meeting.
In recent weeks, there have been indications that both parties have begun to fulfill their previous commitments, with China agreeing to resume shipments of rare earth metals, while the United States offered to ease some restrictions on the export of ethane, chip design software, and aircraft engine components.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reported that the next round of trade talks will begin in early August, just before the expiration of the tariff suspension period.
