The anticipated truce in Gaza is at the forefront of discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting today (Monday) at the White House, marking their third encounter since Trump returned to power about six months ago.
Netanyahu expressed his belief that his discussions with the U.S. president today will contribute to advancing talks on the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza, while Trump expects that an agreement could be reached this week.
Israeli broadcasting authority reported from informed sources that the Trump administration is prepared to ensure that war does not return to Gaza after the 60-day deadline if deemed appropriate, and that the issue of aid and its distribution in Gaza will not pose an obstacle to reaching an agreement.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army radio stated that the military informed the political level in the government of the difficulty in achieving "the war goals of returning the hostages and eliminating Hamas simultaneously," and demanded that the government specify what should be done first, asserting that "he sees the return of the hostages from Gaza as the priority."
The office of the Israeli Prime Minister denied any stagnation in the negotiations in Doha. According to Channel 12, officials confirmed that the talks are progressing positively but without achieving a breakthrough, despite the fact that "Hamas's response to the Weitkov proposal was less than hoped." The newspaper "Israel Hayom" quoted an Israeli official saying that the negotiating delegation in Doha informed Netanyahu that the discussions are moving forward positively.
Netanyahu stated yesterday (Sunday), before boarding his plane to Washington, that the Israeli negotiators participating in the ceasefire talks have clear instructions to reach an agreement on terms accepted by Israel.
He added: "I believe that the discussion with President Trump will certainly contribute to achieving these results," and emphasized that he is determined to ensure the return of the hostages in Gaza and eliminate the threat posed by Hamas to Israel.
Trump expressed his belief that an agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire could be reached this week, which could lead to the release of "a considerable number of hostages," as he put it.
He added in statements to reporters before returning to Washington after spending the weekend in New Jersey: "I think there is a good chance of reaching an agreement with Hamas during the week."
Hamas reported on Friday that its response to the proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza "was characterized by positivity," just a few days after Trump stated that Israel had agreed to "the necessary conditions to finalize" a 60-day truce.
