The South Korean Prosecutor's Office announced that a special team of prosecutors submitted a request today (Sunday) to arrest former President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges related to rebellion due to his declaration of martial law last year.
A statement issued by the special committee investigating the events of December 3 indicated that "the arrest request pertains to allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of justice."
The decree declaring martial law issued by Yoon was revoked about 6 hours after its issuance, when lawmakers voted to overturn it.
According to Prosecutor Park Ji-young, one of the members of the investigative team stated that the special investigator submitted a request today for the issuance of an arrest warrant against the former president at the Seoul Central Court on charges including abuse of power and obstruction of official duties.
Park added that Yoon was also accused of forging official documents due to his declaration of martial law.
He noted that the arrest warrant reveals the reasons for considering detention necessary, adding that the details will be discussed in court.
The Yonhap News Agency reported that Yoon was summoned yesterday, Saturday, and underwent prolonged questioning, spending 14 and a half hours before the committee as part of the investigation related to the rebellion charges.
During the questioning, the special counsel team investigated the allegations facing Yoon, such as issuing directives to the presidential security agency to prevent investigators from executing an arrest warrant against him in early January, and deleting records from secure phones used by many military leaders after his attempt to impose martial law.
