لقي 26 طالبًا على الأقل حتفهم وأصيب العشرات جراء حريق اندلع (الخميس) في مدرستين متجاورتين بمدينة بوكافو، شرقي جمهورية الكونغو الديموقراطية، وفق ما أفادت به الحكومة الإقليمية.
وقالت حكومة ساوث كيفو، في بيان، إن بين الضحايا 19 فتاة و7 فتيان، محذرة من احتمال ارتفاع حصيلة القتلى. وكانت حركة «إم 23» المسلحة، التي تسيطر على بوكافو، قد أعلنت في وقت سابق مقتل 19 فتاة و5 فتيان، مشيرة إلى نقل 29 مصابًا لتلقي العلاج في مرافق صحية محلية.
وبحسب مسؤول الحي موسى لوبالا، الذي تحدث لوكالة «أسوشييتد برس»، بدأ الحريق في منزل قبل أن تمتد ألسنته إلى المدرستين المجاورتين. وأوضح أن عددًا من الطلاب حوصروا داخل مدرسة «فوراها» الثانوية، فيما تعرض بعضهم للاختناق جراء الدخان.
ونُقل عشرات الطلاب من مدرستي «فوراها» الثانوية و«أوجاما» الابتدائية إلى مركز «نيامولاجيرا بي دي أو إم» الصحي، وهم لا يزالون يرتدون زيهم المدرسي. وقال الممرض سيزا جان بابتيست إن الأعداد الكبيرة للمصابين صعّبت على الطواقم الطبية تحديد الحصيلة الدقيقة، وسط تدفق المصابين إلى المركز.
وتحولت محاولة الفرار من النيران إلى مشهد مأساوي، بعدما واجه الطلاب مخرجًا ضيقًا لم يستوعب أعدادهم. وقال لوبالا إن بعضهم اضطر إلى القفز من النوافذ، بينما تدافع آخرون للوصول إلى الباب، ما أدى إلى سقوط عدد منهم على الأرض وتعرضهم للدهس أثناء التدافع.
ولم تُعرف حتى الآن أسباب اندلاع الحريق، فيما أشار لوبالا إلى أن المنطقة التي شهدت الواقعة مكتظة بالسكان، وتنتشر فيها المنازل المشيدة من الخشب، ما ساهم في سرعة انتشار النيران.
وتأتي الكارثة في وقت يواجه فيه القطاع الصحي في المنطقة ضغوطًا كبيرة، بالتزامن مع تفشٍ واسع لفايروس إيبولا أودى بحياة أكثر من 3300 شخص، وسُجلت أكثر من 6800 إصابة مؤكدة.
At least 26 students have died and dozens have been injured due to a fire that broke out (on Thursday) in two adjacent schools in the city of Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the regional government.
The South Kivu government stated in a statement that among the victims were 19 girls and 7 boys, warning of the possibility of the death toll rising. The armed group "M23," which controls Bukavu, had earlier announced the deaths of 19 girls and 5 boys, noting that 29 injured individuals were transferred for treatment at local health facilities.
According to neighborhood official Musa Lubala, who spoke to the Associated Press, the fire started in a house before spreading to the two adjacent schools. He explained that several students were trapped inside "Foraha" secondary school, while some suffered from smoke inhalation.
Dozens of students from "Foraha" secondary school and "Ojama" primary school were taken to the "Nyamolagira P.D.O.M" health center, still wearing their school uniforms. Nurse Siza Jean Baptiste stated that the large number of injured made it difficult for medical teams to determine the exact toll, amid the influx of casualties to the center.
The attempt to escape the flames turned into a tragic scene, as students faced a narrow exit that could not accommodate their numbers. Lubala said that some had to jump from the windows, while others rushed to the door, causing several to fall to the ground and be trampled during the stampede.
The causes of the fire have not yet been determined, while Lubala indicated that the area where the incident occurred is densely populated, with wooden houses that contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
The disaster comes at a time when the health sector in the region is under significant pressure, coinciding with a widespread outbreak of the Ebola virus that has claimed the lives of more than 3,300 people, with over 6,800 confirmed cases recorded.
