في خطوة أثارت جدلاً واسعاً، دشّن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب منشأة احتجاز جديدة في ولاية فلوريدا تُعد الأولى من نوعها في العالم، إذ تحرسها الثعابين السامة والتماسيح المفترسة، وتقع وسط مستنقعات طبيعية معزولة.
السجن الذي أُطلق عليه اسم «أليغيتر ألكاتراز» أو «ألكاتراز التماسيح»، تم بناؤه على أنقاض مطار مهجور في عمق مستنقعات إيفرجليدز، على بُعد نحو 60 كيلومتراً من مدينة ميامي. ويهدف إلى احتجاز المهاجرين غير النظاميين والمشتبه في ارتباطهم بعصابات الجريمة والمخدرات، بحسب ما أعلنه البيت الأبيض.
المنشأة التي أُقيمت خلال ثمانية أيام فقط، محاطة بأسلاك شائكة وسياج معدني، وتقع في بيئة طبيعية خطرة مليئة بالتماسيح والثعابين البورمية. واستُغلت هذه الطبيعة القاسية لإبراز تصميم الإدارة الجمهورية على تشديد سياسة الهجرة، في مواجهة ما وصفه ترامب بـ«الفوضى التي خلّفتها إدارة جو بايدن».
وخلال زيارته التفقدية للموقع، رافق ترمب كل من حاكم ولاية فلوريدا رون ديسانتيس، ووزيرة الأمن الداخلي كريستي نويم، حيث قاموا بجولة في مرافق السجن التي تضم عشرات الأسرّة داخل خيام محاطة بقفص معدني.
وقال ترمب في تصريحات مثيرة خلال فعالية مائدة مستديرة: «نظرتُ إلى الخارج، وهذا ليس مكاناً أرغب في التنزه فيه بأي وقت قريب. نحن محاطون بأميال من المستنقعات الغادرة... والحل الوحيد للخروج هو الترحيل».
الخطوة اعتبرها مراقبون إشارة قوية إلى توجّه أكثر صرامة تجاه ملف الهجرة، فيما يثير السجن الجديد تساؤلات قانونية وأخلاقية حول ظروف الاحتجاز وسط بيئة طبيعية خطرة ومهددة للحياة.
In a move that sparked widespread controversy, U.S. President Donald Trump inaugurated a new detention facility in Florida, the first of its kind in the world, guarded by venomous snakes and predatory alligators, and located in isolated natural swamps.
The prison, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" or "Alcatraz of the Alligators," was built on the ruins of an abandoned airport deep in the Everglades swamps, about 60 kilometers from Miami. It aims to detain undocumented migrants suspected of ties to crime and drug gangs, according to the White House announcement.
The facility, which was established in just eight days, is surrounded by barbed wire and a metal fence, situated in a hazardous natural environment filled with alligators and Burmese pythons. This harsh nature has been exploited to highlight the Republican administration's determination to tighten immigration policy, in the face of what Trump described as "the chaos left by the Biden administration."
During his inspection visit to the site, Trump was accompanied by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, as they toured the prison facilities, which include dozens of beds inside tents surrounded by a metal cage.
Trump made provocative remarks during a roundtable event, stating: "I looked outside, and this is not a place I want to take a stroll in anytime soon. We are surrounded by miles of treacherous swamps... and the only way out is deportation."
The move has been seen by observers as a strong signal of a more stringent approach to immigration issues, while the new prison raises legal and ethical questions about detention conditions in a dangerous and life-threatening natural environment.
