On the backdrop of his equating between Palestinian and Israeli prisoners, a committee in the Israeli parliament (Knesset) voted today (Monday) by a majority to continue the procedures for the expulsion of Arab Member of Knesset Ayman Odeh, despite the reservations of the legal advisor.
Fourteen out of the 25 committee members supported the proposal, in a move backed by the ruling coalition parties led by Likud, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and endorsed by members of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, led by Avigdor Lieberman. This came after the session witnessed significant tension that escalated into a verbal altercation between MKs Ofer Cassif and Nissim Vaturi, prompting committee chair Ofir Katz to suspend the meeting.
Odeh, who heads the Joint List and the Arab Movement for Change, made a statement during the prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel, equating Palestinian prisoners with Israeli hostages.
Following the first phase of the exchange deal, Ayman Odeh wrote on the platform X: "I am happy for the release of the prisoners and detainees; from here we must liberate both peoples from occupation because we were all born free."
After this tweet, Likud MK Avichai Boaron launched an initiative to expel Odeh, indicating that he had gathered the signatures of 68 members on a memorandum calling for Odeh's dismissal, claiming that he equated elite fighters belonging to Hamas with those detained, as he put it.
The number of signatories increased to 70 when he later stated in a speech during a joint Arab-Jewish demonstration against the war: "Gaza will triumph over the policy of war, killing, and destruction, and the Palestinian people will prevail over the occupation."
The next step in these proceedings is to present the decision to the Knesset plenum for a vote, and it must be supported by 90 members regardless of the number of attendees in the voting session for the decision to take effect. In the event of a vote to expel him, Odeh can appeal the Knesset's decision to the Supreme Court.
Odeh commented on the decision via his Facebook account, stating: "Any retreat means that the right of the worker, the university student, and our people to express their opinion is being retracted, and that they will succeed with the policy of intimidation they have sought to impose since the war began," adding: "Every resistance against them means breaking this policy and defending our people's right to express their opinion; we will not retreat an inch... and they can ride their highest horse."
Recently, Odeh was punished with a two-week suspension from the Knesset's public sessions by a decision from the Ethics and Conduct Committee, following statements in which he accused Israel of committing massacres and starvation in the Gaza Strip. During the suspension, the MK will not receive a salary, and a similar penalty was imposed on his party colleague MK Aida Touma-Suleiman, who was suspended for three days due to similar statements regarding the Israeli army's actions in Gaza.
The Adalah Center warned against the committee's decision, emphasizing that it opens the door to further similar practices aimed at delegitimizing the Arab community and its right to choose its representatives.
The center stated in a statement that the committee's decision reveals the control of the far-right over the stance of the majority of Israeli political parties, and that this is just the beginning, especially since the session witnessed unprecedented incitement and attacks against Odeh, Arab MKs, and anyone opposing the expulsion of membership.
Meanwhile, the center called for unifying ranks within the Arab community and working on a unified plan for all political forces to confront the proposal before voting on it in the plenum, and to counter other proposals and plans that may emerge in the coming period against Arab politicians and parties, especially with the approaching elections and the increasing talk about the possibility of advancing their date.
