The assistant to Russian President Vladimir Medinsky warned of the outbreak of a nuclear war if a real peace with Ukraine is not reached, emphasizing that merely having a truce will not end the conflict.
The head of the Russian negotiating delegation with Ukraine stated today (Monday) that the Ukrainian side declared, in April 2022 following consultations with former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and American officials, that foreign partners oppose reaching an agreement with Russia.
In an interview with the Russian television channel "RT," he added: "After Kyiv's consultations with the West, we were told: Our foreign partners oppose concluding the agreement that we had practically agreed upon." Medinsky quoted the Ukrainian delegation as saying: "Our foreign partners do not support concluding the agreement, and in this case, they will not guarantee us assistance and security if we conclude it, so we will fight you until you defeat us or we defeat you."
Russia and Ukraine have been negotiating since the beginning of the military operation, first in Belarus, and at the end of March 2022, in Istanbul.
The delegations had initialed a draft agreement that included Ukraine's commitments regarding a neutral and non-aligned status and a refusal to deploy foreign weapons on its territory, including nuclear weapons, but the negotiation process was halted by Ukraine.
Ukrainian delegation head David Arakhamia acknowledged that the refusal occurred based on a proposal from former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had arrived specifically in Kyiv at that time.
It is noteworthy that the first round of negotiations this year took place on May 16 in Istanbul, ending with an agreement on the exchange of prisoners according to the "one thousand for one thousand" formula. The two sides also agreed to present their vision for a potential future ceasefire, and both delegations expressed their satisfaction with the results of the negotiations.
The second round of direct negotiations was held on June 2 in Istanbul, during which both parties exchanged documents containing their visions for aspects of resolving the conflict.
Medinsky stated that Moscow delivered to the Ukrainian side a memorandum of proposals consisting of two parts, and the delegations agreed that Russia would unilaterally hand over 6,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers. Additionally, Moscow and Kyiv agreed to exchange sick prisoners and prisoners under 25 years old, in a "all for all" format, with no less than 1,000 prisoners from each side. The Russian side also made a specific proposal for a ceasefire lasting 2-3 days in certain areas of the front, as well as providing Moscow with a list of 339 children who have lost contact with their families.
