In recent hours, it seems that the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz is on the verge of resolution, as an American official told Reuters that talks between Iran and Oman have made significant progress that could soon reopen the waterway, coinciding with efforts within Washington to exit the costly military confrontation with Tehran.
Agreement and Lifting of the Naval Blockade
The agency reported that the official stated the United States would lift the blockade imposed on Iranian ports as soon as the agreement is announced and commercial shipping resumes without obstacles. He confirmed that U.S. actions would remain contingent on Iran's performance and its adherence to the commitments under the agreement.
American officials revealed to ABC News that the Iran-Oman agreement would be limited to a period of 60 days, during which efforts would be made to reach a long-term agreement to fully open the Strait of Hormuz and continue negotiations regarding the nuclear agreement. The officials noted that the Trump administration wants to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, without imposing fees on passing ships or requiring them to obtain approval from Iran for passage.
Washington's Conditions for Accepting the Agreement
Other officials mentioned to The Wall Street Journal that the draft agreement for Hormuz stipulates the creation of a temporary route for incoming ships near Iran and a route for departing ships near Oman.
An American official stated that the Trump administration would not accept Iran charging any transit fees under the agreement or having the right to prevent any party from using the waterway, clarifying that any designated shipping routes would be "temporary."
Officials in the region indicated that the proposed agreement grants Iran control that could be permanent over the Strait of Hormuz, noting that "this is the best option available at the moment."
For its part, Fox News reported that former U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the proposed arrangement gives Iran and Oman roles in managing traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, "which could lead to a very bad outcome for the United States."
Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Piesen anticipated that an agreement could be announced within days, followed by a ceasefire lasting a month or two, dedicated to negotiating the Iranian nuclear file.
Efforts to Exit the War
CNN revealed, citing informed sources, that U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Keen is seeking an exit from the war with Iran, after clarifying in private consultations with senior Trump advisors that escalation options could yield counterproductive results.
According to the sources, Keen assured several senior U.S. officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, that air power alone would likely not achieve the objectives announced by Trump.
