U.S. President Donald Trump decided to deploy 2,000 National Guard members amid protests in Los Angeles against immigration policies, according to a report by the French news agency "AFP" citing an official source.

Trump warned on Saturday that the federal government might intervene to deal with the escalating protests against the raids conducted by immigration authorities against undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles.

Trump wrote on his platform "Truth Social": "If California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass cannot do their jobs, which everyone knows they are incapable of, then the federal government will intervene to solve the problem of riots and looting in the way it should be solved."

Protests have been ongoing since Friday in Los Angeles, which were condemned by White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who described them as a "rebellion" against the United States.

On Saturday, security personnel clashed with protesters in tense confrontations in the Paramount area southeast of Los Angeles, where one protester was seen waving a Mexican flag and some covered their mouths with breathing masks.

The Spark of Conflict

The tense confrontation occurred in the suburb of Paramount, about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The New York Times reported that protesters clashed with federal immigration officials near a Home Depot store close to a residential area populated by many Latinos.

The confrontation came a day after masked and armed immigration officials conducted high-profile raids at workplaces in various parts of Los Angeles, sparking angry crowds and leading to hours-long confrontations.

According to the Associated Press, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers executed search warrants at multiple locations on Friday, including outside a clothing warehouse in the fashion district. Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Attorney's Office stated that the action came after a judge found probable cause that the employer was using fraudulent documents for some of its workers.

The Guardian reported that masked agents were seen removing several people from two Home Depot stores in the Los Angeles area and from the headquarters of Ambient Apparel, a clothing manufacturer in the city's fashion district.

Immigration rights advocates reported that the raids also included four other locations, including a donut shop.

The area witnessed a tense scene outside as a crowd of people attempted to prevent the agents from leaving in their vehicles.

The Department of Homeland Security announced in a statement that recent ICE operations in Los Angeles resulted in the arrest of 118 immigrants, including five individuals linked to criminal organizations and people with criminal records.

Following the arrests on Friday, protesters gathered in the evening outside a federal detention center, chanting: "Release them, let them stay!"

Tensions and Tear Gas

On Saturday, amid chants calling for the departure of ICE agents, some protesters waved Mexican flags while others set fire to an American flag, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The air was filled with tear gas and smoke in the southern suburbs of Los Angeles on Saturday, as confrontations between immigration authorities and protesters extended into a second day.

Sound bombs were fired at the crowd, and a portion of a highway was closed amid raids on undocumented immigrants. Concrete blocks and overturned shopping carts were used as makeshift roadblocks.

Meanwhile, members of the border patrol, dressed in riot gear and gas masks, stood guard outside an industrial area in Paramount, firing tear gas as pedestrians and protesters gathered in the middle of the street.

U.S. Government Intervention

President Donald Trump warned on Saturday that the federal government would "intervene to solve the problem," as a border official threatened to deploy the National Guard. Trump stated on his "Truth Social" platform, referring to Governor Gavin Newsom in a derogatory manner: "If Governor Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass cannot perform their duties, which everyone knows they are incapable of, then the federal government will intervene to solve the problem of riots and looting the right way!"

U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth stated that if violence continued in Los Angeles, active-duty forces would also be mobilized.

Governor Gavin Newsom said that the federal government "is moving to take control of the National Guard in California and deploy 2,000 troops," warning that this would only escalate tensions. The Associated Press quoted Newsom saying: "This is a misguided mission and will erode public trust."

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a message on social media directed at "rioters in Los Angeles," stating: "Message to the rioters in Los Angeles: You will not stop us or slow us down. ICE will continue to enforce the law. And if you assault a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Prosecuting Offenders

In the wake of the recent clashes in Los Angeles, authorities pledged to prosecute offenders and warned of an increased security presence, according to AFP.

Tom Homan, the border security chief under Trump, said on Fox News: "We are making Los Angeles safer. Mayor Karen Bass should thank us." He added: "We will call in the National Guard tonight."

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that several individuals were arrested following the clashes on Friday. He added on X: "You bring chaos, and we will bring the handcuffs. Law and order will prevail."
