Confidential Syrian intelligence documents revealed that American journalist Austin Tice, who was kidnapped in Syria in August 2012, was held in the dungeons of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. An investigation by the British BBC network quoted former Syrian officials as saying that Tice was detained inside a facility belonging to a security agency in Damascus, although Assad regime officials denied this.
According to the investigation, Tice disappeared near Damascus in 2012, and about seven weeks later, a video surfaced online showing him blindfolded and handcuffed, with a group of armed men behind him forcing him to read a brief statement.
The prevailing belief was that he was kidnapped by an extremist group, but analysts and American officials suggested that the scene "may have been staged," especially since no armed group, organization, or even the government claimed responsibility for his disappearance, and no news about him was heard, raising widespread speculation about his whereabouts.
The documents titled "Austin Tice," which are highly classified, revealed communications from various branches of Syrian intelligence regarding the man, and showed that Tice was held in a center in Damascus in 2012, with sources confirming that the location was in the Al-Tahouna area.
According to a former Syrian intelligence officer, the journalist was kidnapped in Damascus by a paramilitary group called the National Defense Forces near the suburb of Darayya, and remained there until February 2013.
A man who visited the center where Tice was held after suffering from stomach problems stated that the American journalist was treated better than the Syrian detainees, but he "looked sad, and the joy had disappeared from his face." Several testimonies mentioned that Tice attempted to escape from his cell through a window, but was recaptured and subjected to several interrogations by Syrian intelligence officers.
Despite the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, and the emptying of prisons and security headquarters, no trace of him has been found, although former President Joe Biden had announced that he still believes Tice is alive, a sentiment confirmed by his mother, Debra Tice, who stated that a reliable source informed her that her son is receiving good treatment.
According to estimates by the Syrian Network for Human Rights, more than 100,000 people, including many Arab and foreign journalists, have been forcibly disappeared during the rule of the Assad regime.
