Lebanese President Joseph Aoun emphasized the necessity of preventing foreign interventions in his country, calling for the rule of law to prevail. He confirmed during a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani in Baghdad today (Sunday) that it is essential to affirm the state's sovereignty without antagonizing anyone. Aoun stated that Lebanon "needs a system of common Arab interest within the framework of bilateral agreements."
For his part, the Iraqi Prime Minister reiterated his country's support for the stability and unity of Lebanon and its sovereignty over all its territories. He called for the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south.
The Lebanese president arrived in Baghdad this morning heading a delegation that included the Director General of General Security, Major General Hassan Shuqair, and several advisors.
It is worth noting that since July 2021, Iraq has been supplying Lebanon with fuel to help operate electricity generation stations in exchange for goods and medical services, despite both countries suffering from a severe electricity crisis as well as deteriorating infrastructure due to decades of conflict, neglect, and corruption, according to the French Press Agency.
Iraq had pledged during the Arab summit held last month in the capital Baghdad to provide about 20 million dollars as part of efforts to rebuild Lebanon after a devastating war that lasted a full year between Hezbollah and Israel, which resulted in widespread destruction.
The Iraqi government welcomed thousands of Lebanese fleeing from Israeli bombardment on villages and towns in the south and other areas in Lebanon during the war.
