The Kremlin has ruled out holding a trilateral meeting proposed by Turkey between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and American President Donald Trump, under the auspices of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
It was stipulated that results must be achieved in the talks with Ukraine for such a summit to take place. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency, announced today (Friday) that Moscow will send a delegation in preparation for new talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on Monday, although Kyiv has not yet officially confirmed its participation.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is visiting Kyiv today, proposed that Turkey host a meeting between Putin, Zelensky, and Trump. He said: "We believe that it is possible for the first and second Istanbul talks to culminate in a meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky, led by President Recep Erdoğan."
Fidan added that Russia and Ukraine want a ceasefire, and they should now express their negotiating positions, while a source in the Turkish presidency suggested that the delegations from Russia and Ukraine would arrive in Istanbul next week.
The official Anadolu Agency quoted Fidan as saying: "I see that the situation is starting to take a more optimistic turn with the start of negotiations. Both sides want a ceasefire. No one is saying they don't want that."
For his part, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko expressed his country's hope that the Ukrainian government would take the Istanbul negotiations seriously and seize the opportunity to reach a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
During his participation in the conference "Russia and China, Cooperation in a New Era, in its tenth edition," he confirmed that Russia is interested in a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed on May 10 this year an initiative to resume direct negotiations with Kyiv, which were halted in the spring of 2022, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik. He pointed out that the meeting that took place between representatives of Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul allowed them to agree on a number of practical steps towards a settlement. The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister expressed hope that Kyiv would take these negotiations seriously this time and seize the opportunity to achieve a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
Ukraine expressed on Thursday its readiness to participate in negotiations that Moscow proposed to hold next week in Istanbul, but urged Russia to provide it with a document detailing its conditions for establishing lasting peace. The Kremlin stated that Russia has not yet received any response from Ukraine regarding its proposal to hold the second session of negotiations in Turkish Istanbul next Monday.
