A local official in Nigeria announced today (Tuesday) that more than 44 people have been killed in a series of attacks in the Gwer West area of Benue State in central Nigeria over the past few days, explaining that 32 bodies were recovered on Sunday from two villages, while 12 bodies were recovered from two villages as well on Saturday.
The official clarified that the recovery operation is still ongoing at this moment, noting that the attackers also shot a Catholic priest in the area, who is now in critical condition.
The official pointed out that the attacks are systematic, explaining that the majority of the bodies showed signs of gunfire and direct stabbing, including a pregnant woman who was killed with a machete and her child was mutilated.
The official noted that the priest was left behind after the attackers believed he was dead, while two of his aides were kidnapped, indicating that estimates confirm that the attackers are extremist herders.
Benue State is located in the central belt of Nigeria, an area where the predominantly Muslim north meets the predominantly Christian south. The region experiences competition for land use and conflicts between herders seeking grazing land for their livestock and farmers needing arable land, and this tension often escalates due to ethnic and religious divisions.
On another note, 19 people were killed and 8 others injured as a result of a collision between a passenger bus and a truck in Kogi State, Nigeria. According to Kumar Tsukwam, the director of the Nigerian Road Safety Corps in Kogi State, a speeding passenger bus collided with a moving truck on the Lokoja-Obajana highway today (Tuesday), indicating that the accident resulted in the death of 19 people, including 5 children, and injured 8 others. Local authorities in the state have launched an investigation into the incident.
