The Indian anti-terrorism agency arrested a police officer today (Monday) on suspicion of spying for Pakistan after the largest confrontation between the two countries in decades. According to the "National Investigation Agency," the officer is from the Central Reserve Police Force.
The agency clarified that the officer was arrested in New Delhi for sharing sensitive information with Pakistani agents, noting that the accused, Moti Ram Jat, had actively engaged in espionage activities and shared confidential information related to national security with officers in the Pakistani intelligence since 2023.
A special court ordered Jat to be held in custody until June 6 while he is being investigated. According to local media, Indian authorities have arrested at least 10 other individuals on espionage charges this month, including a student, a security guard, and a businessman.
The police stated that they had arrested a travel blogger in Haryana on similar charges, indicating that the suspected woman had traveled to Pakistan at least twice and had communicated with an official from the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi, according to local media.
At least 70 people have been killed in clashes this month that erupted after an attack on April 22 targeting tourists in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir, which New Delhi accused Pakistan of being behind, a charge denied by Islamabad.
Both countries claim the entire Kashmir region and have fought several wars over control of the territory since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.
