The United States intends to appoint the current U.S. ambassador in Ankara, Thomas Barak, as a special envoy to Syria. This decision to appoint a friend of President Donald Trump comes after the recent U.S. announcement to lift sanctions on Syria.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department stated, "There is no announcement at this time."
For his part, the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qadir Hassoun, considered that the coincidence of the lifting of European sanctions with their American counterparts on Syria represents an important milestone in the process of restoring normal economic and financial relations between Syria and the international community, and constitutes a positive step towards enhancing financial and economic stability.
He welcomed the European Union's decision to lift sanctions on Syria, which came just one week after U.S. President Donald Trump's official announcement regarding the lifting of American sanctions on Syria.
Hassoun emphasized the importance of continued support from friendly European countries to Syria, expressing his gratitude for their principled positions and efforts that reflect a sincere commitment to dialogue and international understanding, according to what was reported by the Syrian news agency "SANA".
It is worth noting that the foreign ministers of the European Union approved yesterday (Tuesday) the lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Syria, as announced by the bloc's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. She stated in a post on the "X" platform after discussions with the ministers in Brussels: "We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new, inclusive, and peaceful Syria."
The European Union had already eased some sanctions related to the energy, transport, and reconstruction sectors, in addition to the financial transactions associated with them; however, some European capitals considered that these steps were insufficient to support the political transition in Syria and its economic recovery.
