كشف الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب تفاصيل مثيرة عن زيارته السرية إلى العراق عام 2018، خلال فترة رئاسته الأولى، واصفاً إياها بأنها تجربة «مرعبة» وضعت حياته في خطر، وذلك خلال فترة الحرب على تنظيم داعش، كاشفاً أنه أُجبر على إطفاء أنوار طائرة «إير فورس ون» وإغلاق النوافذ أثناء التحليق فوق «أراضي العدو»، في ظل إجراءات أمنية مشددة للغاية.
وقال ترمب في خطاب ألقاه أمام الجنود الأمريكيين بقاعدة العديد الجوية بالعاصمة القطرية الدوحة إنه قرر القيام بالزيارة للقاء أحد الجنرالات الأمريكيين والاستفسار عن سبب تأخر حسم المعركة ضد تنظيم «داعش»، قائلاً: «لم أكن أفهم كيف يمكن لمجموعة إرهابية أن تصمد كل هذا الوقت، فقلت: أريد أن أذهب بنفسي».
وكشف ترمب تفاصيل الرحلة قائلاً: «غادرت الساعة الثالثة صباحاً، وكانت طائرة إير فورس ون بانتظاري، قالوا لي سيدي لدينا مشكلة، علينا إطفاء كل الأضواء وإغلاق الستائر عند التحليق فوق أراضي العدو»، مضيفاً أن الطائرة هبطت في قاعدة عين الأسد دون أي إضاءة، في تجربة وصفها بأنها «لا تُنسى».
وجرت زيارة ترمب إلى العراق في ديسمبر 2018 إلى قاعدة الأسد الجوية في محافظة الأنبار، وكانت الأولى لترمب إلى منطقة حرب خلال ولايته الأولى، وهدفت إلى لقاء القوات الأمريكية المرابطة هناك خلال عيد الميلاد، وكان من بين أولوياته تعزيز الوجود العسكري الأمريكي في الشرق الأوسط، خصوصا في العراق وسورية، لمواجهة تنظيم «داعش».
وأشار إلى أن الزيارة كانت «محاطة بإجراءات أمنية مشددة»، ولم يتم الإعلان عنها مسبقاً، ورغم أنه لم يحدد تاريخها، فإن البيت الأبيض كان قد أعلن في ديسمبر 2018 زيارة مفاجئة للرئيس ترمب وزوجته ميلانيا إلى قاعدة عين الأسد بمحافظة الأنبار غرب العراق، لتهنئة القوات الأمريكية بمناسبة عيد الميلاد.
وأوضح ترمب أن الجنرال أبلغه أن القيود المفروضة على العمليات كانت تُجبر الطائرات على الانطلاق من قواعد بعيدة، ما قلل من فاعلية الضربات الجوية، موضحاً أنه بعد عودته إلى واشنطن وافق على الخطة، «وبعد وقت قصير، هزمنا 100% من خلافة داعش، على عكس ما كانوا يخبرونني به في العاصمة».
لم يوضح ترمب تفاصيل إضافية عن طبيعة التهديدات التي واجهها، لكن تقارير سابقة من عام 2018 أشارت إلى أن الزيارة تم التخطيط لها بعناية فائقة، مع تنسيق وثيق بين الجيش الأمريكي والسلطات العراقية. وتشير بعض المصادر إلى أن القلق كان يتركز على احتمال رصد الطائرة الرئاسية من قبل جماعات مسلحة مزودة بصواريخ أرض-جو.

He disclosed that he was forced to turn off the lights of Air Force One and close the windows while flying over "enemy territory," under extremely tight security measures.
Trump said in a speech delivered to U.S. soldiers at Al Udeid Air Base in the Qatari capital, Doha, that he decided to make the visit to meet with one of the American generals and inquire about the delay in decisively defeating ISIS, stating: "I couldn't understand how a terrorist group could last this long, so I said: I want to go myself."
He revealed details of the trip, saying: "I left at three in the morning, and Air Force One was waiting for me. They told me, 'Sir, we have a problem; we have to turn off all the lights and close the curtains while flying over enemy territory,'" adding that the plane landed at Al Asad Air Base without any lighting, in an experience he described as "unforgettable."
Trump's visit to Iraq in December 2018 was to Al Asad Air Base in Anbar Province, and it was his first trip to a war zone during his first term. The visit aimed to meet with the American forces stationed there during Christmas, and one of his priorities was to strengthen the U.S. military presence in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria, to confront ISIS.
He noted that the visit was "surrounded by strict security measures" and was not announced in advance. Although he did not specify the date, the White House had announced in December 2018 a surprise visit by President Trump and his wife Melania to Al Asad Air Base in Anbar Province, western Iraq, to congratulate the U.S. forces on Christmas.
Trump explained that the general informed him that the restrictions imposed on operations were forcing planes to take off from distant bases, which reduced the effectiveness of airstrikes, clarifying that after returning to Washington, he approved the plan, "and shortly after, we defeated 100% of the ISIS caliphate, contrary to what they were telling me in the capital."
